FBVWhen a prophet speaks in the Lord's name and what he says doesn't happen or come true, then that is a not a message from the Lord. The prophet has spoken with contempt for the Lord. Don't be intimidated by him.

T4TThe answer is that when someone speaks a message about what will happen in the future, a message that he says was revealed by Yahweh, if what he says does not happen, you will know that the message did not come from Yahweh. That person has wrongly claimed that it was revealed to him by Yahweh. So you do not need to be afraid of anything that he says.”

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

18:22 Any prophet whose prediction fails must be branded as false, even if he claims to speak for God. The mere claim is insufficient if it goes unfulfilled.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

בְּשֵׁ֣ם

in/on=name_of

Here, name represents Yahweh’s power and authority. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your language or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [by my authority]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

הַדָּבָר֙

the,thing

Here, the thing refers to what the prophet predicts will happen. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [the prophecy]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

וְלֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֤ה הַדָּבָר֙ וְלֹ֣א יָב֔וֹא

and=not will_belong the,thing and=not come_true

These two phrases does not happen and does not come to pass mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them and express the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [and the thing does not actually happen]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

הַדָּבָ֔ר

the,message

Here, word represents a message or prophecy. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your language or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [is a message]

Note 5 topic: writing-pronouns

דִּבְּר֣וֹ

spoken,it

The pronoun it refers to the false prophecy. If this is not clear for your readers, you could use the person's name here. Alternate translation: [has spoken the message]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

בְּזָדוֹן֙ דִּבְּר֣וֹ

in/on/at/with,presumption spoken,it

The implication is that the false prophet did not speak in the name of Yahweh. He spoke arrogantly by presuming to know what Yahweh wants. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [has spoken it message without my authority]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

לֹ֥א תָג֖וּר מִמֶּֽנּוּ

not afraid of,him

The implication is that the Israelites should not be afraid of that prophet and not respect that prophet. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [you shall not take him seriously]
