Readers’ Version

Literal Version

11You must love your god Yahweh and follow his instructions, rules, regulations, and commands from now on. 2Of course that was you all and your parents who experienced your god Yahweh’s discipline and who saw his power and strength and the amazing miracles done on your behalf—not your children. 3They didn’t see his actions and the miracles done to King Far-oh and all his people right there in Egypt,[ref] 4or what he did to the Egyptian army with its horses and chariots when he caused the Red Sea to flow over the top of them as they chased you, and how Yahweh destroyed them and they’ve never recovered to this day,[ref] 5or how he helped you all in the wilderness until you reached this place. 6Your children didn’t see what Yahweh did to Eliav’s sons Datan and Aviram (from the tribe of Reuven) when the ground opened up and swallowed them, along with their houses and tents and all their families and animals right in the middle of the encampment[ref] 7because you all are the ones who actually saw the amazing miracles that Yahweh did.

11And_you_will_love DOM YHWH god_of_your and_you_will_keep command_of_his and_his_of_regulations and_his_of_judgements and_his_of_commands all_of the_days.
2And_you(pl)_will_know the_day if/because not DOM children_of_your(pl) who not they_have_known and_which not they_have_seen DOM the_training_of YHWH god_of_your(pl) DOM greatness_of_his DOM his/its_hand (the)_strong and_his_of_arm (the)_outstretched.
3And_DOM signs_of_his and_DOM deeds_of_his which he_did in_the_middle of_Miʦrayim to_Parˊoh the_king_of Miʦrayim and_to/for_all land_of_his.

7If/because your(pl)_eyes are_the_ones_which_saw DOM all_of the_work_of YHWH the_big/great(sg) which he_did.

8So then, follow all the instructions that I’m giving you all today so that you’ll all be strong to enter and take possession of the land once you cross the river 9and so that you all might live for a long time in that land which Yahweh promised to give them and their descendants—a land flowing with milk and honey 10because it’s not like Egypt where your ancestors came out from, where you planted seed and had to water the fields by hand. 11But the land that you’re all about to enter over the river has a terrain of hills and valleys, i.e., it drinks in the rain water. 12It’s a land that your god Yahweh cares aboutwatching over it from the beginning of each year to the end.

13If you all listen to the instructions that I’m giving you today, loving your god Yahweh and serving him with sincerity and with energy,[ref] 14then he says that he’ll give the land the seasonal early and late rains so that you’ll be able to produce grain, and new wine, and olive oil. 15He’ll provide grass in the countryside for your livestock, and you’ll eat and be satisfied. 16Guard yourselves to make sure that you’re not deceived and end up turning around to serve othergods’ and bow down to them, 17because then Yahweh would become angry at you and close the skies so that there’d be no rain, and the land would stop producing, and you’d all soon die from off the good land that he’s about to give you.

18Memorise these words of mine and constantly think about them. Your hands should always be applying them and your minds should always be evaluating them.[ref] 19Teach them repeatedly to your children: when you’re sitting at home, when you’re walking down the road, when you go to lie down, and when you get up. 20Carve them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates, 21so that your own lifetimes, and the lifetimes of your children will be extended in the land that Yahweh promised to give to your ancestors to have as long as the sky remains over the earth.

22If you all follow these instructions that I’m telling you to do, to love your god Yahweh and live how he wants you to, and stay faithful to him, 23then he’ll drive all those peoples out ahead of you all, and you’ll dispossess groups that are larger and more powerful than yourselves. 24Every place that your feet step on will become yours: from the southern desert to Lebanon in the north, and from the Euphrates in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.[ref] 25No one will be able to resist you all. Your god Yahweh will make those peoples in that land terrified of you, just as he promised he would.

26Now listen, today I’m giving you all the option of a blessing or a curse: 27the blessing is if you all decide to obey your god Yahweh’s instructions that I’m giving you today, 28but the curse is if you all don’t take any notice of his instructions, or if you turn away from what I’m commanding you all today to go after other gods that you previously had nothing to do with. 29Whenever your god Yahweh brings you into the land that you’re entering to take possession of, you must pronounce the blessing from Mt. Gerizim, and the curse from Mt. Eyval.[ref] 30(Those two mountains are across the Yarden river, west of the river plain where the Canaanites live, near the Oak of Moreh opposite Gilgal.) 31You’ll all soon be crossing the Yarden to go in and occupy the land that your god Yahweh is giving you. As you all take it over and start to live there, 32make sure that you follow all the instructions and rules that I’m giving to you all today.

8And_you(pl)_will_keep DOM all_of the_command which I am_commanding_of_you the_day so_that you(pl)_may_be_strong and_you(pl)_will_go and_you(pl)_will_take_possession_of DOM the_earth/land where you(pl) are_about_to_pass_over to_there to_take_possession_of_it.

The Covenant Is Renewed at Shechem

Deuteronomy 11:26-32; 27:1-26; Joshua 8:30-35

A quick search on the internet reveals that some of the top ways to commit something to long term memory include: 1) organizing the information; 2) making associations; 3) using visual cues (graphs, etc.); 4) creating mnemonic devices (rhymes, acrostics, etc.); 5) writing it down; 6) saying it out loud; 7) quizzing yourself; 8) and rehearsing it (https://www.usa.edu/blog/science-backed-memory-tips/). There should be no doubt, then, that the covenant renewal ceremony at Shechem would have been a truly memorable event for all involved. Two times in the book of Deuteronomy the Israelites are instructed to renew the covenant at Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal after they have entered the Promised Land of Canaan, and then the actual event is recorded in the book of Joshua. Located in the heartland of Israel, Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal sat on either side of the ancient city of Shechem, where the Lord had promised centuries earlier to give Canaan to Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 12:6-7). The renewal ceremony was essentially the corporate, verbal affirmation of the terms of the covenant that the Lord had established with Israel at Mount Sinai. As with virtually all ancient Near Eastern covenants, the terms included blessings for those who remained faithful to it and curses for those who broke it. Joshua and the priests stood between the two mountains with the Ark of the Covenant and read the entire book of the law. Six of the tribes (Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin) stood in front of the Ark on Mount Gerizim and shouted the blessings for faithfulness to the covenant, and six of the tribes (Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali) stood in front of the Ark on Mount Ebal and shouted the curses for unfaithfulness. It is very possible that this ceremony was performed within a natural amphitheater that exists even today on both Gerizim and Ebal at the place shown on this map. By standing within the concave spaces of the two mountains, the tribes would have been both “on” the mountains (Deuteronomy 27:11-13) and “on opposite sides of” the Ark (Joshua 8:33), and they would have been entirely capable of hearing Joshua’s words as well as each other’s shouts of blessings and curses. As far as why Gerizim was assigned the place of blessing and Ebal the place of curses, it is not entirely clear, but it may be because the ancients typically regarded east as being in front of them, so Gerizim would have been located on their right, which was typically favored over the left. Also, commentators have often expressed confusion over the mention of “the arabah” and “Gilgal” in Deuteronomy 11, typically because it is assumed that they refer to the Jordan Valley and the Gilgal near Jericho, respectively. This author, however, is convinced that “the arabah” (often meaning, “plain”) refers to the small plain immediately east of Shechem. And “Gilgal” (meaning, “wheel/circle”) in this verse refers to a location just across the plain at Khirbet Gulegil. (The name “Gilgal” was likely applied to at least four locations throughout Canaan; see Joshua 4:19; 15:7; Judges 3:19; 2 Kings 2:1; 4:38; Deuteronomy 11:30.) Centuries later, a Samaritan temple was built atop Mount Gerizim after foreign peoples were resettled in Israel, and this is what the Samaritan woman was referring to when she said to Jesus, “Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem” (John 4:20). But Jesus replied to her, “Believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem….But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth” (John 4:21-23; see also “Shechem and the Hill Country of Samaria” map).
