TSNTyndale Study Notes:

18:8 support from his family: Although Levites were in full-time ministry at the Tabernacle and (later) the Temple, they could still hold material assets of their own (see Num 35:1-8). The Levites were to be supported by the regular offerings designated for that purpose without having to forfeit any of their own assets.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

חֵ֥לֶק כְּחֵ֖לֶק יֹאכֵ֑לוּ

benefit as,benefit eat

The implication is that all of the Levites at the place of worship will eat alike portions by receiving the same amount of food. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [They shall all eat the same portions]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

מִמְכָּרָ֖יו עַל־הָאָבֽוֹת

sale_of,his on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,family

Here, the sale of his fathers refers to the money from selling family inheritance. The Levite was allowed to keep this money and use it as he wished. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [his family inheritance]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

הָאָבֽוֹת

the,family

Moses is using the term fathers to mean “ancestors.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [his ancestors]
