11:1 Yeshua is aware of Lazarus’ death from afar

11[ref]Now there was a man called Lazarus who lived in the village of Bethany along with his sisters Martha and Maria. 2[ref](Maria was the one who later poured fragrant oil over Yeshua and wiped his feet with her hair.) But now their brother was seriously ill 3and so the two sisters sent a message to Yeshua saying, “Master, this man that you love is seriously ill.”

4However, when Yeshua got the message he said to those around him, “This sickness won’t end in death but in honour for God, so that his son will also be honoured because of it.

5Now it was true that Yeshua loved the three of them. 6Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed in the place where he was for two more days 7before he said to his followers, “It’s time to head down to Yudea again.

8But they double-checked, “Honoured teacher, the Yudeans wanted to execute you, so do you really want to go back there again?”

9And Yeshua answered, “There are twelve hours of light in the day. Anyone who walks during the daytime doesn’t stumble because he is seeing the light of this world. 10But anyone who walks at night will stumble, because the light is not in them.11And he continued, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I’m going so that I can wake him up.

12But his followers objected, “Master, it’s good if he’s sleeping because it helps with healing.”

13But Yeshua had spoken about Lazarus’ death—not just normal sleep as they had thought. 14So Yeshua told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead 15and I’m glad that I wasn’t there, because you all will benefit as your faith grows. Anyway, let’s get moving.

16Thomas (nicknamed ‘Twin’) grumbled to the others, “Yeah, we might as well go so that we can get killed as well.”

11And a_certain man was ailing, Lazaros of Baʸthania of the village of_Maria/(Mirəyām), and Martha the sister of_her.
2And Maria was the woman having_anointed the master with_ointment, and having_wiped_off the feet of_him with_the hairs of_her, whose the brother Lazaros was_ailing.
3Therefore the sisters sent_out to him saying:
master, see, he_whom you_are_loving is_ailing.
4But having_heard the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) said:
This the sickness not is to death, but for the glory of_ the _god, in_order_that the son of_ the _god may_be_glorified by it.
5And the Yaʸsous was_loving the Martha, and the sister of_her, and the Lazaros.
6Therefore when he_heard that he_is_ailing, then indeed he_remained in the_place which he_was two days.
7Then after this he_is_saying to_the apprentices/followers:
We_may_be_going into the Youdaia again.
8The Disciples are_saying to_him:
My_great_one, the Youdaiōns were_seeking now to_stone you, and you_are_going there again?
9Yaʸsous answered are not Twelve, hours of_the day?
If anyone may_be_walking in the day, he_is_ not _stumbling, because he_is_seeing the light of_ the this _world.
10But if anyone may_be_walking in the night, he_is_stumbling, because the light is not in him.
11He_said these things, and after this he_is_saying to_them:
Lazaros the the_friend of_us has_been_fallen_asleep, but I_am_going, in_order_that I_may_awaken him.
12Therefore the apprentices/followers said to_him:
master, if he_has_been_fallen_asleep he_will_be_being_healed.
13But the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) had_spoken about the death of_him.
But those supposed that he_is_speaking about the sleep of_ the _sleep.
14Therefore then the Yaʸsous said to_them with_plainness:
Lazaros died_off, 15and I_am_rejoicing because_of you_all, that not I_was there in_order_that you_all_may_believe, but we_may_be_going to him.
16Therefore Thōmas which being_called Didumos/[twin] said, to_the fellow-apprentices/followers:
May_be_ we _going also, in_order_that we_may_die_off with him.

11:17 Yeshua is the resurrection and the life

17So when they eventually arrived, Lazarus body had already been in the burial chamber for four days. 18The village of Bethany was less than three kilometres from Yerusalem, 19so many of the Yudeans from there had come out to console Martha and Maria after the death of their brother.

20As soon as Martha heard that Yeshua had arrived, she went out to meet him, but Maria stayed behind where she was sitting in the house. 21Martha cried, “Yeshua, master. If you’d been here, my brother wouldn’t have died, 22because I already know that anything that you ask from God, he will give it to you.”

23Yeshua responded, “Your brother will come back to life.

24“Yes, I know that he’ll come back to life at the resurrection on the last day,” said Martha.

25But Yeshua continued, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes that I’m from God, even if they die they’ll still be living, 26and everyone who’s alive and believes that I was sent from God, will not die in the next age.

27Martha replied, “Yes, master, I do believe that you’re the messiah, God’s son, the one sent into this world.”

17Therefore having_come the Yaʸsous found him, having already four days.
in the tomb.
18And Baʸthania was near the Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim), from about fifteen stadiums.
19And many of the Youdaiōns had_come to the Martha and Maria/(Mirəyām), in_order_that they_may_console them concerning their brother.
20Therefore the Martha when, she_heard that Yaʸsous is_coming, met with_him, But Maria was_sitting in the house.
21Therefore the Martha said to the Yaʸsous:
master, if you_were here, the brother of_me would not died_off.
22also now I_have_known that as_much_as wishfully you_may_request the god, the god will_be_giving to_you.
23The Yaʸsous is_saying to_her, the brother of_you Will_be_rising_up.
24Martha is_saying to_him:
I_have_known that he_will_be_rising_up in the resurrection at the last day.
25The Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) said to_her:
I am the resurrection and the life, the one believing in me, even_if he_may_die_off, will_be_living, 26and everyone which living and believing in me, by_no_means may_ not _die_off to the age.
Are_you_believing this?
27She_is_saying to_him:
Yes, master, I have_believed that you are the chosen_one/messiah, the son of_ the _god, the one coming into the world.

11:28 Yeshua weeps with his close friends

28After saying this, Martha went and quietly called her sister Maria, “The teacher is on his way and he wants to see you.” 29So Maria quickly got up and went to find him. 30At that stage, Yeshua hadn’t yet come into the village proper, but was still at the edge where Martha had met him. 31The Yudean people who’d been sitting with Maria in sympathy there in the house, when they saw her get up quickly and go out, they assumed that she was going to the cemetery to weep there.

32But when Maria found Yeshua, she knelt at his feet and said, “Master, if you’d been here my brother wouldn’t have died.”

33Now when Yeshua saw her weeping there, along with the others that had followed also weeping, he himself was quite affected and groaned inside, 34but he just asked, “Where has he been laid?

Master, come and see,” they replied.

35Then Yeshua broke down and burst into tears, 36which made the others comment, “See how much he cared about him.”

37But some of them mocked, “This is the man who could make a blind man see again, yet how come he wasn’t able to stop this man from dying!”

28And having_said this she_went_away, and called Maria, the sister of_her secretly, having_said:
The teacher is_coming, and he_is_calling you.
29And that woman when she_heard, she_was_raised quickly and was_coming to him.
30And the Yaʸsous had_ not_yet _come into the village, but was still at the place where the Martha met with_him.
31Therefore the Youdaiōns which being with her in the house and consoling her, having_seen that the Maria/(Mirəyām) quickly she_rose_up and came_out, they_followed after_her, having_supposed that she_is_going to the tomb, in_order_that she_may_weep there.
32Therefore the Maria, when she_came where Yaʸsous was, having_seen him, fell of_him at his feet, saying to_him, master, if you_were here, the brother wishfully of_me not died_off.
33Therefore Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) when he_saw her weeping, and the ones Youdaiōns having_come_together to_her weeping, he_groaned in_the spirit and disturbed himself.
34And he_said:
Where have_you_all_laid him?
They_are_saying to_him:
master, be_coming and see.
35The Yaʸsous wept.
36Therefore the Youdaiōns were_saying:
Behold, how he_was_loving him.
37But some of them said:
This man the one having_opened_up the eyes of_the blind man was_ not _able, to_ also _make that this one may_ not _die_off?

11:38 Yeshua calls Lazarus back to life

38So Yeshua who was still holding back sobs, went to the cemetery. Lazarus’ body had been placed in a cave with a stone blocking it, 39and Yeshua instructed them to take away the stone.

Martha (the sister of the dead man) spoke up, “Master, the stink will be bad because it’s already been four days.”

40But Yeshua responded, “Didn’t I tell you that if you would believe, then you would see God’s power?41So they took the stone away and Yeshua looked upwards and said, “Father, I thank you that you listen to me. 42Actually I know that you always hear me, but I said that for the sake of these people so that they will believe that it was you who sent me here.” 43After saying that, he shouted, “Lazarus, come out!44Then the man who had died slowly shuffled out—still with linen strips wrapped around his hands and his feet, and a cloth wrapped around his face.

38Therefore Yaʸsous again groaning in himself, is_coming to the tomb.
And it_was a_cave, and a_stone was_laying_on against it.
39The Yaʸsous is_saying:
Take_away the stone.
Martha the the_sister of_the one having_died is_saying to_him:
master, he_is_ already _stinking, because/for it_is the_fourth_day.
40The Yaʸsous is_saying to_her:
Not I_said to_you that if you_may_believe, you_will_be_seeing the glory of_ the _god?
41Therefore they_took_away the stone.
And the Yaʸsous lifted_up his eyes upward, and said:
father, I_am_giving_thanks to_you that you_heard from_me.
42And I had_known that always you_are_hearing from_me, but because_of the crowd which having_stood_around, I_said it, in_order_that they_may_believe that you sent_ me _out.
43And having_said these things, with_a_ loud _voice he_cried_out:
Lazaros, come out.
44the one having_died Came_out, his feet and his hands having_been_bound with_linen_strips, and the face of_him had_been_bound_about.
with_a_handkerchief.
The Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) is_saying to_them:
Release him and allow him to_be_going.

11:45 The leaders create a plan to execute Yeshua

(Mat. 26:1-5, Mark 14:1-2, Luke 22:1-2)

45Because of that, many of the Yudeans believed that Yeshua was from God after having followed Maria and seeing what Yeshua did. 46But others went and told the Pharisee party what Yeshua had done. 47So the chief priests and the Pharisee party called a formal meeting and asked, “What should we do because this man is doing many miracles. 48If we allow him to continue like this, all the crowds will be believing he’s the messiah, and then the Romans will come and destroy both our temple and our governance.”

49But one of them, Caiaphas who was chief priest that year, spoke up, “You don’t know anything. 50Don’t you all realise that its better for all of us if one man dies so that the people and the nation won’t be destroyed?” 51(He didn’t say this from his own thinking, but being chief priest that year, he was announcing God’s message that Yeshua was going to die for the nation, 52and not only for this nation, but for all of God’s children scattered around the world to become united.)

53As a result, from that day on they decided that Yeshua needed to be executed. 54Because of that, Yeshua no longer walked around Yudea in public, but went out to the town of Ephraim out in the wilderness and stayed there with his followers.

55At that time, the Jewish Passover celebrations were approaching, and many people from the regions went to Yerusalem ahead of the celebrations to purify themselves. 56They were looking out for Yeshua and as they stood around in the temple, they asked each other, “What do you think? Surely he won’t come to the celebrations.” 57The chief priests and the Pharisee party had already announced that if anyone knew where Yeshua was, they must inform them so that they could arrest him.

45Therefore many of the Youdaiōns, which having_come to the Maria/(Mirəyām), and having_seen what he_did, they_believed in him.
46But some of them went_away to the Farisaios_party, and told to_them what Yaʸsous did.
47Therefore the chief_priests and the Farisaios_party gathered_together the_council, and they_were_saying:
What are_we_doing, because this the man is_doing many signs?
48If we_may_allow him thus, all will_be_believing in him, and the Ɽōmaios will_be_coming, and they_will_be_taking_away of_us both the place and the nation.
49But a_ one _certain of them, Kaiafas being chief_priest the year that, said to_them:
You_all have_ not _known nothing.
50Nor you_all_are_counting that it_is_benefitting for_you_all that one man may_die_off for the people, and not all the nation may_perish.
51And he_said this not from himself, but being chief_priest the that year, he_prophesied that Yaʸsous was_going to_be_dying_off for the nation, 52and not only for the nation, but in_order_that also the children of_ the _god, the ones having_been_scattered may_gather_together into one.
53Therefore from that the day, they_counselled that they_may_kill_ him _off.
54therefore The Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) no_longer was_walking in_public among the Youdaiōns, but went_away from_there into the region near the wilderness, to a_city being_called Ephraim, and_there he_remained with the apprentices/followers.
55And the passover_feast of_the Youdaiōns was near, and many went_up to Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim) out_of the region before the passover_feast, in_order_that they_may_purify themselves.
56Therefore they_were_seeking the Yaʸsous, and they_were_saying with one_another having_stood in the temple:
What it_is_supposing to_you_all?
That by_no_means he_may_ not _come to the feast?
57And had_given the chief_priests and the Farisaios_party commands, that if anyone may_know where he_is, he_may_divulge it, so_that they_may_arrest him.
