TSNTyndale Study Notes:

11:1-57 The raising of Lazarus foreshadows Jesus’ own coming death and resurrection. Even the description of Lazarus’ grave (11:38, 44) prefigures Jesus’ grave (20:1, 7). Shortly after this event, Jesus was anointed for burial (12:3) and the hour of his glorification began (12:23).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ

from himself

Here, from himself could mean: (1) Caiaphas was speaking something he had thought of himself. Alternate translation: “on his own initiative” (2) Caiaphas was speaking from his own authority, which is how the phrase is used in 5:19. Alternate translation: “on his own authority”

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

ἀλλὰ ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου

but chief_priest being ¬the year that

This clause indicates the reason why Caiaphas prophesied a true prophecy from God. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning explicitly. Alternate translation: “because he was high priest that year”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

ἀποθνῄσκειν ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἔθνους

/to_be/_dying_off for the nation

See how you translated nation in the previous verse.
