UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) May my pursuers be ashamed, but do not let me be ashamed

(Some words not found in UHB: put_to_shame persecutors,my and,not put_to_shame me dismayed they(emph) and,not dismayed me bring on,them day disaster and,double destruction destroy,them )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “Bring shame on my pursuers, but do not bring shame on me”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) May they be dismayed, but do not let me be dismayed

(Some words not found in UHB: put_to_shame persecutors,my and,not put_to_shame me dismayed they(emph) and,not dismayed me bring on,them day disaster and,double destruction destroy,them )

This phrase means basically the same thing as the previous one and adds emphasis to Jeremiah’s prayer. Alternate translation: “Make them very afraid, but do not make me afraid”.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) shatter them with a double share of destruction

(Some words not found in UHB: put_to_shame persecutors,my and,not put_to_shame me dismayed they(emph) and,not dismayed me bring on,them day disaster and,double destruction destroy,them )

Jeremiah speaks of Yahweh destroying his enemies as if they were objects that Yahweh would shatter. The idiom “a double share” means to give twice as much. Alternate translation: “shatter them with complete destruction” or “destroy them twice as much” (See also: figs-idiom)
