ULT But the people said, “You will not go out, for if we certainly flee, they will not put a heart to us. But if half of us die, they will not put a heart to us, for you are, compared to us, 10,000. But now, it is better that you become help for us from the city.”
UST But his soldiers said, “No, we will not allow you to go with us. If they force us to all run away, they will not be concerned about us. Or if they kill half of us, they will not care about that, either. To them, capturing you is more important than capturing ten thousand of us. So it would be better that you stay here in the city and send help to us.”
BSB § But the people pleaded, “You must not go out! For if we have to flee, they will pay no attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not care; but you are worth ten thousand of us.[fn] It is better for now if you support us from the city.”
18:3 Two Hebrew manuscripts, some LXX manuscripts, and Vulgate; most Hebrew manuscripts care; for now there are ten thousand like us
OEB {This verse will need special attention.} But the people said, ‘You shall not go out; for if we flee away, no one will care for us, or if half of us die, no one will care for us, for you are equal to ten thousand of us. Also it is now better for you to be ready to help us from the city.’
WEB But the people said, “You shall not go out, for if we flee away, they will not care for us, neither if half of us die, will they care for us. But you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore now it is better that you are ready to help us out of the city.”
NET But the soldiers replied, “You should not do this! For if we should have to make a rapid retreat, they won’t be too concerned about us. Even if half of us should die, they won’t be too concerned about us. But you are like ten thousand of us! So it is better if you remain in the city for support.”
LSV And the people say, “You do not go out, for if we utterly flee, they do not set [their] heart on us; and if half of us die, they do not set [their] heart to us—for [you are] now like ten thousand of us; and now, [it is] better that you are for a helper to us from the city.”
FBV But the men replied, “No, you must not go out into battle! For if we have to run away, they won't care about us. Even if half of us die, they won't care about that either. But you are worth ten thousand of us, so it's better if you stay here and send us help from the town.”
T4T But his soldiers said, “No, we will not allow you to go with us. If they force us all to run away, they will not be concerned about that happening. Or if they kill half of us, that will also not be what they want. To them, killing you is more important than killing 10,000 of us. So it will be better that you stay here in the city and send help to us.”
LEB Then the troops said, “You will not go out, for if we must flee,[fn] thenthey will not care about us;[fn] even if half of us die, they will not care about us,[fn] but now, youare like ten thousand of us. And so then, it is better for us that you be in the city to help.”
BBE But the people said, It is better for you not to go out: for if we are put to flight, they will not give a thought to us, and if death overtakes half of us, it will be nothing to them: but you are of more value than ten thousand of us: so it is better for you to be ready to come to our help from this town.

18:3 You are worth 10,000 of us: Although David’s men flattered him, their insistence that he stay behind might actually suggest David’s advancing frailty (see 21:15-17).
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
(Occurrence 0) you are worth ten thousand of us
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said the,men not go_out that/for/because/then/when if to_flee flee not they_will_set about,us heart and=if die half,us not they_will_set about,us heart that/for/because/then/when now of,us ten thousand and=now good that/for/because/then/when be to/for=ourselves from,city to,help )
This means that the enemy army considering killing David of greater worth than killing 10,000 of the other men. The number 10,000 here is an exaggeration used to emphasize a very great number of people. Alternate translation: “they would rather kill you than to kill 10,000 of us” or “killing you is worth more to them than killing a great number of us”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
(Occurrence 0) that you be ready to help us from the city
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said the,men not go_out that/for/because/then/when if to_flee flee not they_will_set about,us heart and=if die half,us not they_will_set about,us heart that/for/because/then/when now of,us ten thousand and=now good that/for/because/then/when be to/for=ourselves from,city to,help )
David could help them from the city by advising them and sending men to help them. This can be stated clearly. Alternate translation: “that you stay here in the city and send help to us”
