Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

10:34-39 Allegiance to Jesus has priority over allegiance to family.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

(Occurrence -1) ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ φιλῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος καὶ ὁ φιλῶν υἱὸν ἢ θυγατέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος)

Jesus is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from earlier in the sentence if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [more than he or she loves me … more than he or she loves me]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence -1) οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ φιλῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος καὶ ὁ φιλῶν υἱὸν ἢ θυγατέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος)

Here, the phrase worthy of me indicates that the person deserves or is fit to be Jesus’ disciple. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this idea more explicit. Alternate translation: [does not deserve to be my disciple … does not deserve to be my disciple]
