17 Then Asa’s son Yehoshafat (Jehoshaphat) replaced him as king, and he strengthened their defenses against Yisrael (Israel). 2 He placed troops in all of Yehudah’s (Judah) fortified cities, and posted garrisons across Yehudah and in the cities in Efrayim (Ephraim) that his father Asa had captured. 3 Yahweh helped Yehoshafat because he followed his ancestor David’s example at the beginning, and didn’t ask the Baals for guidance, 4 because he asked his father’s god, and he followed God’s instructions rather than doing the evil things that were done in Yisrael. 5 So Yahweh enabled him to maintain control of his kingdom, and all of Yehudah brought tribute to Yehoshafat, causing him to become very wealthy and highly respected. 6 He was completely devoted to doing what pleased Yahweh, even removing the hilltop shrines and the Asherah poles from Yehudah.

7 In the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben -Hayil, Ovadyah (Obadiah), Zekaryah (Zechariah), Netanel, and Mikayah, to teach in Yehudah’s cities. 8 They were accompanied by the Levites Shemayah, Netanyah, Zevadyah, Asahel, Shemiramot, Yonatan (Jonathan), Adoniyah, Toviyah, and Tov-Adoniyah, along with two priests, Elishama and Yehoram (Jehoram). 9 They took a scroll with Yahweh’s instructions written on it, and went around Yehudah’s cities teaching the people.

17 And_ Yəhōshāfāţ/(Jehoshaphat) his/its_son _he _became _king in_place _of _him and_he _strengthened _himself on Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel).

2 And_he _put an _army in_all the _cities _of Yəhūdāh/(Judah) (the)_fortified and_he/it _gave garrisons in_land of _Yəhūdāh and_in_the _cities _of ʼEfrayim which ʼĀşāʼ his/its_father he _had _captured.

3 And_he/it _was YHWH with Yəhōshāfāţ if/because he _walked in_the _ways _of Dāvid his/its_father (the)_former and_not he _sought (to)_Baˊal.

4 If/because (to)_the_god _of his/its_father he _sought and_in_commands _of_his he _walked and_not according_to _the _deed[s]_of Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel).

5 And_ YHWH _he _established DOM the_kingdom in_his/its_hand and_ all _of Yəhūdāh _they _gave tribute to_Yəhōshāfāţ and_he/it _was to_him/it wealth and_honour to_increase _in _number.

6 And_ his/its_heart _it _was _high in_the _ways _of YHWH and_again he _removed DOM the _high_places and_DOM the _ʼAshērāh_poles from_Yəhūdāh.

7 And_in_year _of three of_reigning_his he _sent (to)_officials _of_his (to)_Ben- ḩayil and_(to)_ˊOⱱad^yāh and_(to)_Zəkar^yāh and_(to)_Nətan^ʼēl and_(to)_Mīkāyəhū to_teach in_the _cities _of Yəhūdāh.

8 And_were_with_them the_Lēviyyiy Shəmaˊ^yāh and_Nətan^yāh and_Zəⱱad^yāh and_ˊAsāh^ʼēl and[fn] and_Yəhōnātān/(Jonathan) and_ʼAdoniy^yāh and_Ţōⱱiy^yāh and_good ʼₐdoniy^yāhū the_Lēviyyiy and_were_with_them ʼElīshāˊma and_Yəhōrām/(Jehoram) the_priests.

9 And_they _taught in_Yəhūdāh/(Judah) and_was_with_them the _book _of the _law _of YHWH and_they _went _round in_all the _cities _of Yəhūdāh and_they _taught among_people.

17:10 Yehoshafat’s rise

Southern kingdom

10 All the surrounding kingdoms were afraid of Yahweh, so they didn’t attack Yehoshafat (Jehoshaphat). 11 Some of the Pelishtim brought tribute to Yehoshafat, including lots of silver. Also, the Aravim brought him flocks totalling 7,700 rams and 7,700 goats. 12 So Yehoshafat continued to become more powerful, and he built palaces in Yehudah (Judah), as well as storehouses in the cities. 13 He accumulated many supplies in Yehudah’s cities.

He also had many powerful warriors in Yerushalem (Jerusalem). 14 These are the leaders and numbers from each tribe:

From the tribe of Yehudah, Adnah was the commander, and he had three-hundred thousand warriors,
15 His assistant Yehohanan commanded 280,000,
16 Next was Zikri’s son Amasyah, who volunteered for Yahweh and commanded two-hundred thousand warriors.
17 From the tribe of Benyamin, Elyada led two-hundred thousand men equipped with bows and shields,
18 next to him was Yehozavad with 180,000 equipped for war.

19 Those were the ones who served the king, along with the ones the king had placed in Yehudah’s (Judah) fortified cities.

10 And_he/it _was the _dread _of YHWH on all _of the _kingdoms _of the _lands which were_around Yəhūdāh and_not they _waged _war with Yəhōshāfāţ/(Jehoshaphat).

11 And_from the_Pəlishtiy were_bringing to_Yəhōshāfāţ tribute and_silver a _load also the_ˊArāⱱī were_bringing to_him/it flock[s] rams seven _of thousand(s) and_seven hundred(s) and_male _goats seven _of thousand(s) and_seven hundred(s).

12 And_ Yəhōshāfāţ _he/it _was going and_becoming _great to (to)_upwards and_he/it _built in_Yəhūdāh fortresses and_cities _of stores.

13 And_property much it _belonged to_him/it in_the _cities _of Yəhūdāh and_men _of war mighty_men_of strength in_Yərūshālaim/(Jerusalem).

14 And_these group[s]_of_were_their to_the _house _of their _ancestors _of_their of_Yəhūdāh commanders _of thousands ˊAdnāh was_the_commander and_were_with_him mighty_men_of strength three hundred(s) thousand.

15 And_on his/its_hand Yəhōḩānān/(Jehohanan) was_the_commander and_were_with_him two _hundred and_eighty thousand.

16 And_on his/its_hand ˊAmaş^yāh the _son _of Zikrī who_volunteered to/for_YHWH and_were_with_him two _hundred thousand mighty_man_of strength.

17 And_from Binyāmīn a _mighty_man_of strength ʼElyādāˊ and_were_with_him men_equipped _of bow and_shield two _hundred thousand.

18 And_on his/its_hand Yəhōzāⱱād/(Jehozabad) and_were_with_him one _hundred and_eighty thousand men_equipped _of war.

19 These were_the_ones _who_served DOM the_king (from)_besides _of those_whom the_king he _put in_the _cities _of (the)_fortification in_all Yəhūdāh/(Judah).
