29Ḩizqiyyāh he_became_king a_son_of twenty and_five year[s] and_twenty and_nine year[s] he_reigned in/on/at/with_Yərūshālam and_name_of his/its_mother [was]_ʼAⱱiyyāh the_daughter_of Zəkaryāh.
2And_he/it_made the_right in/on_both_eyes_of YHWH according_to_all that he_had_done Dāvid his/its_father.
3He in/on/at/with_year the_first of_reign_his in/on/at/with_month the_first he_opened DOM the_doors_of the_house_of YHWH and_repaired_them.
4And_he/it_brought DOM the_priests and_DOM the_Lēviyyiy and_gathered_them in_square_of the_east.

15And_gathered DOM brothers_of_their and_consecrated and_they_came according_to_command_of the_king in/on/at/with_words_of YHWH to_cleanse the_house_of YHWH.
16And_they_came the_priests into_inner_part the_house_of YHWH to_cleanse and_brought_out DOM all_of the_unclean_things which they_found in_(the)_palace of_YHWH to_courtyard_of the_house_of YHWH and_took the_Lēviyyiy to_carried to_valley_of Qidrōn outside_to.

19And_DOM all_of the_vessels which he_had_rejected the_king ʼĀḩāz in/on/at/with_reign_of_his in/on/at/with_unfaithfulness_of_he we_have_prepared and_consecrated and_see_they to_(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before the_altar_of YHWH.
20and_ Ḩizqiyyāh _rose_early the_king and_gathered DOM the_officials_of the_city and_he/it_ascended the_house_of YHWH.
21And_brought young_bulls seven and_rams seven and_lambs seven and_male_goats_of goats seven as_sin_offering on the_kingdom and_for the_sanctuary and_for Yəhūdāh/(Judah) and_he/it_said to_descendants_of ʼAhₐron the_priests to_offer on the_altar_of YHWH.
22And_slaughtered the_bulls and_received the_priests DOM the_blood and_sprinkled the_altar_on and_slaughtered the_rams and_sprinkled the_blood the_altar_on and_slaughtered the_lambs and_sprinkled the_blood the_altar_on.
23And_brought DOM the_goats_of the_sin_offering to_(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before the_king and_the_assembly and_laid hands_of_their on_them.

25And_stationed DOM the_Lēviyyiy the_house_of YHWH in/on/at/with_cymbals in/on/at/with_harps and_in/on/at/with_lyres in/on/at/with_command_of Dāvid and_Gād the_seer_of the_king and_Nātān the_prophet if/because in/on/at/with_hand_of YHWH the_command in/on/at/with_hand_of prophets_of_his.
26and_they_stood the_Lēviyyiy in/on/at/with_instruments_of Dāvid and_the_priests in/on/at/with_trumpets.
27and_ Ḩizqiyyāh _he/it_said to_offered the_burnt_offering on_the_altar and_in/on/at/with_time [when]_it_began the_burnt_offering it_began the_song_of YHWH and_the_trumpets and_at the_hands_of the_instruments_of Dāvid the_king_of Yisrāʼēl/(Israel).
28And_all the_assembly [were]_bowing_down and_the_singers [was]_singing and_the_trumpeters [were]_blowing_a_trumpet[fn][fn] the_all [was]_until to_finished the_burnt_offering.
29And_when_finished to_offering they_bowed_down the_king and_all the_present with_him/it and_worshiped.
30And_ Ḩizqiyyāh _he/it_said the_king and_the_officials to_the_Lēviyyiy to_sing_praises to/for_YHWH in/on/at/with_words_of Dāvid and_ʼĀşāf the_seer and_sang_praises to with_gladness and_bowed_down and_worshiped.
31and_ Ḩizqiyyāh _said and_he/it_said now you_all_have_filled hand_of_yourselves to/for_YHWH draw_near and_bring sacrifices and_thank_offerings to_house_of YHWH and_brought the_assembly sacrifices and_thank_offerings and_all [person]_willing_of heart burnt_offerings.
32And_he/it_was the_number_of the_burnt_offerings which they_brought the_assembly cattle seventy rams one_hundred lambs two_hundred for_burnt_offering to/for_YHWH all_of these.
33And_the_consecrated_offerings [were]_cattle six hundred(s) and_sheep three_of thousand(s).
34Only the_priests they_were as_few and_not they_were_able to_skin DOM all_of the_burnt_offerings and_helped_them brothers_of_their the_Lēviyyiy until was_complete the_work and_unto they_had_consecrated_themselves the_priests if/because the_Lēviyyiy [were]_upright_of heart in_consecrating more_than_the_priests.
35And_also burnt_offering[s] to_increase_in_number in/on/at/with_fat_of the_peace_offerings and_in/on/at/with_drink_offerings for_the_burnt_offerings and_ the_service_of _established of_the_house_of of_YHWH.
36And_ Ḩizqiyyāh _rejoiced and_all the_people on the_prepared the_ʼElohīm for_the_people if/because in/on/at/with_quickness it_had_happened the_thing.

Prophets of the Old Testament before 800 B.C.

If you ask someone today what biblical prophets did, they will likely tell you that they divinely foretold of future events. While this was often the case, most prophets in the Bible focused as much on “forthtelling” God’s messages as they did on “foretelling” the future. That is, their primary role was to simply “forthtell” divinely acquired messages to leaders and groups of people, and at times that included foretelling of coming judgment, blessing, rescue, etc. Also, though plenty of prophets (sometimes called “seers” in Scripture) often spoke in confrontational or eccentric language that put them at odds with kings and religious leaders, the biblical writers also applied the term prophet to people who communicated God’s messages in ways that many readers today might not think of as prophecy, such as worship leaders appointed by David to “prophesy with lyres, harps, and cymbals” (1 Chronicles 25:1). Similarly, the books of Joshua, Judges, 1 & 2 Samuel, and 1 & 2 Kings are typically categorized as history by Christians, but in the Hebrew canon they belong to the category of Former Prophets. The Lord raised up prophets throughout all of biblical history, from the giving of the law under Moses to the revelation of the last days by the apostle John, and the kings of Israel and Judah often recognized and supported specific people as official prophets of the royal court and consulted them to find out God’s perspective about official matters. Following is a list of nearly everyone designated as prophet or seer in the Old Testament and the primary area of their ministry.

Hezekiah Strengthens Judah

Throughout his reign, Hezekiah strengthened Judah by restoring proper worship of the Lord and preparing the nation for revolt against Assyria. Though the Bible does not clearly say, both of these aspects of Hezekiah’s reign may have been borne out of a desire to undo the detrimental choices of his father, Ahaz, who had promoted idolatry through Judah (2 Chronicles 28:1-4) and made Judah a vassal to the king of Assyria in exchange for help against Israel and Aram (2 Kings 16-17; 2 Chronicles 28; Isaiah 7-8; see also “The Final Days of the Northern Kingdom of Israel” map). Later, when Hezekiah was a teenager, he witnessed Assyria’s grueling three year siege to capture Samaria (2 Kings 17:1-6; 18:9-12), perhaps cementing his resolve to throw off Judah’s yolk of servitude to Assyria (2 Kings 18:7). Whatever the reasons for his actions as king, Hezekiah spent considerable resources promoting the worship of the Lord and preparing for the inevitable Assyrian attack that would follow Judah’s refusal to submit to Assyria any longer. Hezekiah began by directing the priests and Levites to consecrate themselves and restore ritual purity to the Temple and all its furnishings (2 Chronicles 29). He sent word throughout all Israel and Judah to come and celebrate Passover together once again in Jerusalem (2 Chronicles 30). Though only a few from Israel accepted Hezekiah’s invitation, the Passover was a time of great celebration and worship for all who did come from Israel and Judah. After this, the worshipers went throughout Israel and Judah and destroyed the pagan worship centers (2 Kings 18:4; 2 Chronicles 31:1). Hezekiah also conducted a series of actions to strengthen Judah against the coming Assyrian attack. On the west he attacked the Philistines as far as Gaza (2 Kings 18:8). Part of this effort may have included a Simeonite attack on some Meunites in the valley of Gerar (as in the Septuagint; the Hebrew reading Gedor is likely due to a misreading of the letter r as the similarly shaped letter d), which is recounted in 1 Chronicles 4:39-41. Elsewhere in Scripture the Meunites appear to have lived in the region of Seir (2 Chronicles 20), south of Judah, but a remnant of them may have fled toward Gerar during Uzziah’s time when he attacked them and likely took some of them captive to serve at the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem (Ezra 2:50; Nehemiah 7:52; also see “Resurgence of Israel and Judah” map). Other Simeonites attacked a remnant of Amalekites living in Seir, thus providing increased protection on Judah’s southern border (1 Chronicles 4:39-43). Hezekiah also fortified Jerusalem and redirected various sources of water away from enemies who might lay siege to the city (2 Chronicles 32:1-8). As part of these preparations Hezekiah commissioned the hewing of a tunnel that channeled water from the Gihon spring (probably also called the “waters of Shiloah” in Isaiah 8:6) away from the eastern side of the city and deposited it in the Lower Pool (also called the Pool of Siloam) further inside the city walls. Hezekiah also repaired portions of the wall that were broken down and built a second wall outside it, likely in the Kidron Valley. He also produced many weapons and shields. The writer of Chronicles appears to portray these preparations as being in keeping with Hezekiah’s other acts of faithfulness and righteousness. Some scholars, however, suspect that Isaiah 22:1-14 may reflect another perspective regarding Hezekiah’s preparations, though it is not certain that this passage refers to Hezekiah’s efforts.
