TSNTyndale Study Notes:

7:1-53 Stephen responded to the accusations by testifying about his Lord (cp. Luke 21:12-17). Instead of defending himself against their prosecution, he became a witness in God’s prosecution of them, exposing their stubbornness and unfaithfulness to God. Stephen’s recital of Israel’s past reminded them of their repeated rejections of those whom God had sent.
• Stephen’s review of Israel’s history has three principal parts, dealing with the work of the patriarchs (Acts 7:2-16), the ministry of Moses (7:17-43), and the role of the Tabernacle and the Temple (7:44-50). Stephen followed up his historical survey with a clear attack on the hard-heartedness of his own people. With a prophetic challenge, he urged them to stop rebelling against the Holy Spirit and turn to God with repentance and faith.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-time-simultaneous

ἐν ᾧ καιρῷ

in that time

Stephen uses this phrase to introduce something that happened while Pharaoh was trying to kill the Israelite babies. Alternate translation: “While this was happening,”

Note 2 topic: writing-participants

ἐγεννήθη Μωϋσῆς

/was/_born Moses

Here Stephen introduces Moses into his story. See how you translated his name in 3:22.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐγεννήθη Μωϋσῆς

/was/_born Moses

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you could state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “the birth of Moses took place”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἦν ἀστεῖος τῷ Θεῷ

˱he˲_was beautiful ¬the ˱to˲_God

This could mean: (1) that Moses was beautiful in God’s perspective. Alternate translation: “God considered him to be beautiful” (2) in an idiiom, that Moses was very beautiful. Alternate translation: “he was very beautiful”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὃς ἀνετράφη & ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρός

who /was/_brought_up & in the house ˱of˲_the father

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you must state who did the action, you could make Moses’ parents the subject. Alternate translation: “his parents cared for him … in their home”
