TSNTyndale Study Notes:

27:4 The covenant ceremony was to take place at Mount Ebal, a mountain east of Shechem (see Josh 8:30-35). The Samaritan Pentateuch reads “Mount Gerizim” here, an obvious attempt to justify the existence of the Samaritan temple on that mountain (see Deut 11:29).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / you

General Information:

Moses speaks to the Israelites as if they were one man, so the words “you” and “your” here are singular.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / you

(Occurrence 0) you have passed … set up … I am commanding you

(Some words not found in UHB: and=it_was in/on/at/with,crossed,you_all DOM the,Jordan set_up DOM the,stones the=these which/who I commanding DOM,you_all the=day in/on/at/with,mount Ebal and,cover DOM,them in/on/at/with,plaster )

Moses is addressing the Israelites as a group, so the instances of “you” and the command “set up” are plural.

(Occurrence 0) plaster them with plaster

(Some words not found in UHB: and=it_was in/on/at/with,crossed,you_all DOM the,Jordan set_up DOM the,stones the=these which/who I commanding DOM,you_all the=day in/on/at/with,mount Ebal and,cover DOM,them in/on/at/with,plaster )

Alternate translation: “spread plaster on them” or “make them so you can write on them.” See how you translated this in Deuteronomy 27:2.

(Occurrence 0) Mount Ebal

(Some words not found in UHB: and=it_was in/on/at/with,crossed,you_all DOM the,Jordan set_up DOM the,stones the=these which/who I commanding DOM,you_all the=day in/on/at/with,mount Ebal and,cover DOM,them in/on/at/with,plaster )

This is a mountain near Shechem. See how you translated it in Deuteronomy 11:29.
