TSNTyndale Study Notes:

8:19-22 Isaiah contrasts his counsel with that of his ungodly contemporaries. Isaiah’s message gives light, whereas the message of the spiritists led to darkness and death.
• Mediums used various means of divination, including summoning the dead, in the attempt to determine the future (see 19:3). God had banned these useless activities (47:9; Deut 18:9-11).

TTNTyndale Theme Notes:

Trusting God in Isaiah

The prophet Isaiah saw that mere humans prove untrustworthy (Isa 2:22). When in distress, the people of Judah often sought help from other nations (e.g., Egypt or Assyria), but Isaiah pointed out that Judah’s success and security was based upon their trust in God (see 8:9-17). King Hezekiah was mocked by the Assyrian army for trusting in God, yet it was that very trust that led to a great victory for God’s people (36:1–37:37).

Those who trust in the Lord live in awe of him (29:23) and are not afraid (see 35:4), knowing that the Lord will be with them (51:12). They respond in praise because they trust in him (12:1-2; 25:9), and they express their trust through obedience to him (26:8). The faithful might feel the effects of God’s judgment on his enemies as they await the Lord’s salvation. Yet they find new strength day by day (40:31) and see themselves ultimately as citizens of God’s city, Zion (see 26:1-3). Those who trust in the Lord have true and lasting inner peace (26:3, 12; 32:17-18).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Isaiah is speaking.

(Occurrence 0) They will say to you, “Consult with those who speak with the dead and with spirits,” the ones who chirp and mutter incantations. But should a people not consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?

(Some words not found in UHB: and=because/when say to,you_all consult to/towards the,mediums and=near/to the,spiritists the,chirp and,the,mutter am=not people to/towards his/its=god consult behind the,living to/towards the,dead )

This could mean: (1) “They will say to you, ‘Consult with the mediums and spiritists, those who chirp and mutter incantations. Should a people not consult their gods? They should consult the dead on behalf of the living for teaching and for testimony.’” or (2) “When they say to you, ‘Consult with the mediums and spiritists, those who chirp and mutter incantations,’ should a people not consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living? To the law and to the testimony!”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / you

(Occurrence 0) They will say to you

(Some words not found in UHB: and=because/when say to,you_all consult to/towards the,mediums and=near/to the,spiritists the,chirp and,the,mutter am=not people to/towards his/its=god consult behind the,living to/towards the,dead )

The word “they” refers to those who do not trust Yahweh. The word “you” is plural and refers to those who trust Yahweh.

(Occurrence 0) the ones who chirp and mutter incantations

(Some words not found in UHB: and=because/when say to,you_all consult to/towards the,mediums and=near/to the,spiritists the,chirp and,the,mutter am=not people to/towards his/its=god consult behind the,living to/towards the,dead )

The words “chirp” and “mutter” refer to the sounds mediums and spiritists made when trying to speak to dead people. Alternate translation: “they people who whisper and mutter their magic words to try and speak to dead people”

(Occurrence 0) chirp

(Some words not found in UHB: and=because/when say to,you_all consult to/towards the,mediums and=near/to the,spiritists the,chirp and,the,mutter am=not people to/towards his/its=god consult behind the,living to/towards the,dead )

make sounds like birds

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) But should a people not consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?

(Some words not found in UHB: and=because/when say to,you_all consult to/towards the,mediums and=near/to the,spiritists the,chirp and,the,mutter am=not people to/towards his/its=god consult behind the,living to/towards the,dead )

These questions are to show that people should consult God instead of foolishly trying to talk to dead people. Alternate translation: “But people should ask Yahweh to guide them. They should not seek answers from those who have died.”
