TSNTyndale Study Notes:

7:18 Spiritual rebirth is absolutely necessary if one is to produce the good fruit that Jesus demands. Good works flow from faith; good works and faith cannot be separated (see Jas 2:14-26).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / exmetaphor

οὐ δύναται δένδρον ἀγαθὸν καρποὺς πονηροὺς ποιεῖν, οὐδὲ δένδρον σαπρὸν καρποὺς καλοὺς ποιεῖν

not /is/_able /a/_tree good fruits evil (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὐ δύναται δένδρον ἀγαθὸν καρποὺς πονηροὺς ἐνεγκεῖν οὐδὲ δένδρον σαπρὸν καρποὺς καλοὺς ποιεῖν)

Here Jesus continues to speak of people as if they were plants that produced fruits. Express the idea as you did in the previous verse 7:17. Alternate translation: “A good tree is not able to produce bad fruits, nor a rotten tree to produce good fruits. Similarly, believers do not do what is wrong, and unbelievers do not do what is right”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

οὐδὲ δένδρον σαπρὸν

nor /a/_tree bad

Jesus is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from earlier in the sentence if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “nor is a rotten tree able”
