Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

13:23 will only a few be saved? Some believed that only a small number would be saved. Others thought that all Jews would be saved because they were descendants of Abraham (see study note on 3:8).
In this section Jesus advised people to do their best to enter the kingdom of God while there was still time. He spoke figuratively about this, using the figure of entering through the narrow door. After the owner of the house closed the door, many would try to enter but they would not be able to do so.
Some other headings for this section are:
Jesus warned that many people would not be able to enter the kingdom of God
There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 7:13–14 and 21–23.
In this paragraph someone asked Jesus a question. He replied indirectly by telling the people a parable.
“Lord,” someone asked Him,
Someone asked him, “Lord/Master,
At one place there was a person who asked him, “Sir,
“Lord,” someone asked Him: The BSB has placed the phrase someone asked Him after the start of what this person said. In the Greek text, this phrase is at the beginning of the verse, before the quotation. Place it wherever it is natural in your language.
Lord: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Lord was probably used here as a polite, respectful way to address a religious teacher or any other important man. Other ways to translate this term of address are:
Sir (NJB)
Master
See Lord, Context 3, in the Glossary.
someone asked Him: This clause introduces an incident that happened at one of the places along the way. We do not know whether this questioner was one of Jesus’ followers or was simply a person who was listening to Jesus teach. Use a general term to refer to this person.
“will only a few people be saved?”
will only a few people be saved from their sins?”
will God save/rescue only a few people from eternal punishment?”
will only a few people be saved?: The verb be saved means “to be rescued or delivered from something.” In this context it refers to being rescued from the spiritual dangers of sin and the punishment from God that results from sinning.
The verb be saved is passive. In some languages it may be necessary to use an active verb form and indicate that God is the one who saves. For example:
Is God going to save only a few people?
In some languages it may be necessary to say what God would save these people from. For example:
Will only a few people be saved from sin?
Will God rescue only a few people from eternal punishment?
For the word saved, see also the note on 7:50a. See save, Meaning 2, in the Glossary.
Jesus answered,
Jesus/He answered by saying to everyone there,
And Jesus said to them all,
Jesus answered: The clause Jesus answered introduces what Jesus said in response to the question in 13:23b. Notice that although one person asked the question, Jesus’ response was for everyone. He used you(plur) in the verses that follow (13:24–27).
Note 1 topic: writing-participants
εἶπεν & τις αὐτῷ
said & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἶπεν Δέ τὶς αὐτῷ Κύριε εἰ ὀλίγοι οἱ σῳζόμενοι ὁ Δέ εἶπεν πρός αὐτούς)
Luke uses this phrase to introduce a new character into the story. Alternate translation: [someone in one of those places asked him]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
εἰ ὀλίγοι οἱ σῳζόμενοι?
if few_‹are› the_‹ones› ˓being˒_saved
This was an idiomatic way of asking a question. Alternate translation: [is God going to save only a few people?]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
εἰ ὀλίγοι οἱ σῳζόμενοι?
if few_‹are› the_‹ones› ˓being˒_saved
If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who would do the action. Alternate translation: [is God going to save only a few people?]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ὁ & εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς
he & said (Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἶπεν Δέ τὶς αὐτῷ Κύριε εἰ ὀλίγοι οἱ σῳζόμενοι ὁ Δέ εἶπεν πρός αὐτούς)
The implication is that a crowd had gathered to meet Jesus as he went through this place on his journey, and that the questioner was one person in the crowd. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [Jesus replied to this person and to the whole crowd that was there]
