OET (OET-LV)And some were_being_present at the_same the time, reporting to_him about the Galilaios, of_whom the blood Pilatos mixed with the sacrifices of_them.

OET (OET-RV)There were some people there at the time who’d reported to Yeshua that Governor Pilate had killed some Galileans when they were sacrificing.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 13:1–5: Everyone must repent

In this section Jesus continued his teaching about God judging people by saying that people needed to repent. Pilate’s soldiers had recently murdered some people from Galilee. Other people had died when a tower fell on them. The crowd that was listening to Jesus thought that all these people had died because they had been evil and God was punishing them. But Jesus told the crowd that they themselves needed to repent just as much as those people who died had needed to repent.

Other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus told people to repent or they would die

Turn from your sins or die (GNT)

This teaching occurs only in Luke.

13:1a

At that time some of those present told Jesus about the Galileans

This verse begins with a Greek conjunction that introduces a new incident in the story. While some English versions (NASB, NET, NIV) translate it as “Now,” it is not a time word. Most English translations, including the BSB, do not translate it explicitly.

At that time: The phrase At that time refers to the same time as the events at the end of chapter 12, when Jesus had been teaching the crowd.

Consider where it is most natural in your language to put the time setting for a story. The BSB and several other English versions place it at the beginning of the sentence. For example:

About this time Jesus was informed (NLT)

some of those present: There are two ways to interpret the Greek verb that the BSB translates as some of those present in this context:

  1. It indicates that some people were already present. They had been standing there listening to Jesus. For example:

some people were there (NCV) (BSB, NIV, RSV, NCV, GNT, NET)

  2. It indicates that some people arrived. They may have heard what Jesus had just said, but they had not been part of the crowd originally. For example:

some people arrived (NJB) (NJB, REB)

A number of versions translate this clause ambiguously. For example:

some people reported (GW)

Jesus was informed (NLT)

It is recommended that you translate ambiguously, if possible. Both interpretations are well supported. Choosing one or the other does not affect the meaning of the rest of the section. If you cannot translate ambiguously, it is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), along with most English versions.

told Jesus: The Greek word that the BSB translates as told means to inform or report about something that has happened. See the examples from the GW and NLT quoted earlier in this part of the verse.

about the Galileans: The phrase the Galileans refers to some Jewish people, probably men, who were from the province called Galilee. At the time when they were killed, they were not in Galilee. They were at the temple in Jerusalem. We do not know how many people were involved, but it may have been as few as two or three.

13:1b

whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.

whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices: The clause whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices is a figure of speech. It means that Pilate had ordered his soldiers to kill the Galileans. The soldiers killed them while they were offering sacrifices. As a result, their blood mixed with the blood of the animal sacrifices.

In some languages it may be necessary to translate the meaning without the figure of speech. For example:

whom Pilate ordered his soldiers to kill. The soldiers killed them while they were offering sacrifices

When you translate this verse part, be careful not to imply that Pilate ordered the soldiers to kill the Galileans while they were in the act of sacrificing. It is more likely that Pilate ordered the Galileans to be killed, and the soldiers found them at the Temple sacrificing and killed them.

Pilate: Pilate was the Roman governor.

sacrifices: The word sacrifices here refers to the animals that the Galileans were killing as an offering to God. For example:

they were offering sacrifices to God (GNT)

General Comment on 13:1a–b

Another way to translate this verse is to combine the verse parts. For example:

About this same time Jesus was told that Pilate had given orders for some people from Galilee to be killed. His soldiers had killed the people while they were offering sacrifices.

Luke uses the word And to introduce background information that will help readers understand what Jesus teaches next. Alternate translation: [Now]

Note 2 topic: writing-participants

Luke uses this phrase to introduce new characters into the story. Alternate translation: [there were some people present at that time who were telling him]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

˓were˒_being_present & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: παρῆσαν Δέ τινές ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ καιρῷ ἀπαγγέλλοντες αὐτῷ περί τῶν Γαλιλαίων ὧν τό αἷμα Πιλᾶτος ἔμειξεν μετά τῶν θυσιῶν αὐτῶν)

This implicitly means while Jesus was still teaching the crowds, as Luke said he was doing in [11:54](../11/54.md). If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [while he was still teaching the crowds, some of them were]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

Luke is speaking about this event to indicate that the blood of the Galileans was shed at the same time as the blood of their animal sacrifices. Alternate translation: [whom Pilate had killed while they were offering sacrifices at the temple]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ὧν τὸ αἷμα Πειλᾶτος ἔμιξεν μετὰ τῶν θυσιῶν αὐτῶν

˱of˲_whom (Some words not found in SR-GNT: παρῆσαν Δέ τινές ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ καιρῷ ἀπαγγέλλοντες αὐτῷ περί τῶν Γαλιλαίων ὧν τό αἷμα Πιλᾶτος ἔμειξεν μετά τῶν θυσιῶν αὐτῶν)

Luke uses the term blood to refer to the death of these Galileans. Alternate translation: [whom Pilate had killed while they were offering sacrifices at the temple]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ὧν τὸ αἷμα Πειλᾶτος ἔμιξεν μετὰ τῶν θυσιῶν αὐτῶν

˱of˲_whom (Some words not found in SR-GNT: παρῆσαν Δέ τινές ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ καιρῷ ἀπαγγέλλοντες αὐτῷ περί τῶν Γαλιλαίων ὧν τό αἷμα Πιλᾶτος ἔμειξεν μετά τῶν θυσιῶν αὐτῶν)

Pilate likely did not kill these Galileans personally. Rather, he ordered his soldiers to kill them. Alternate translation: [whom Pilate’s soldiers had killed as they were offering sacrifices at the temple] or [whom Pilate had ordered his soldiers to kill as they were offering sacrifices at the temple]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

13:1 Pilate had murdered some people from Galilee: This particular incident is not known from other sources, but Pilate was a ruthless governor who, on several occasions, violently suppressed revolts (see Josephus, War 2.9.2-4; Antiquities 18.3.1-2).

OET (OET-RV)There were some people there at the time who’d reported to Yeshua that Governor Pilate had killed some Galileans when they were sacrificing.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
