8 And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and showing the good news of the kingdom of God, and the twelve [were][fn] with him, 2 and certain women, who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven demons, 3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others,[fn] who [[also]][fn] served them from their possessions.
4 As a large crowd was gathering and people from city after city were coming to him, he spoke {through a parable}:[fn]
5 “The sower went out to sow his seed. And while [he was][fn] sowing, some fell by the road and was trampled, and the birds [of the sky][fn] ate {it}.[fn] 6 [[But]] Also some fell upon a rock, and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked {it}.[fn] 8 And other fell on[fn] the good [[and beautiful]][fn] ground, and sprang up, and bore fruit a hundredfold.”
And when he had said these things, he cried, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
9 And his disciples were asking him [[saying]],[fn] “What might this parable be?”
10 But he said, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries [of the kingdom][fn] of God, but to the rest in parables, so that seeing they may not see and hearing they may not understand.”[fn]
11 “Now this is the parable: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the road are the ones who {have heard; then}[fn] the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
13 “Those on the rock are the ones who, when they hear, receive {the word}[fn] with joy; and [these][fn] have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.[fn]
14 “The ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard [[the word]],[fn] [go out and][fn] are choked with worries, [and][fn] wealth, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity.
15 “But the ones on the good ground, these are the ones who, having heard the word [[of God]][fn] with a [good and][fn] noble heart, hold it fast and bear fruit with endurance.
16 “No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under [a bed],[fn] but {puts it}[fn] on a lampstand [, so that those who enter may see the light].[fn]
17 “[For][fn] Nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, nor anything secret that will not be known and come to light.
18 “Therefore, pay attention to how you hear; for whoever has, to him will be given; and whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken away from them.”
19 But his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20 And it was reported to him [[that,]][fn] “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, {wanting to see you}.”[fn] 21 But he answered and said to them, “My mother and my brothers, these are the ones {hearing and doing the word of God}.”[fn]
22 {Now}[fn] it happened one of those days that he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” And they set out. 23 As they were sailing, he fell asleep. And a [[great]][fn] windstorm came down on the lake, and [{they were}[fn] filling with water and][fn] they were in danger.
24 Approaching, they woke him up, saying, “{Master, Master},[fn] we are perishing!” But {having been awakened},[fn] he rebuked the wind and the wave [of the water];[fn] and they ceased, and there was a calm.
25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid and marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water[, and they obey him][fn]?”
26 And they sailed to the country of the {Gerasenes},[fn] which is opposite Galilee.
27 When {he}[fn] went out [onto the land],[fn] a [certain][fn] man [from the city][fn] met him, {who had demons, and for a considerable time he did not wear a garment},[fn] and he did not stay in a house, but in the tombs. 28 Seeing Jesus, {he cried out}[fn] [and fell before him,][fn] {and with a loud voice said [[to him]][fn]},[fn] “What have I to do with you, [Jesus,][fn] Son of the Most High [God]?[fn] I beg you, do not torment me.” 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For many times it had seized him, {and}[fn] he was kept bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the chains {and be}[fn] driven [by the demon][fn] into the wilderness. 30 Jesus asked him [[saying,]][fn] “What is your name?” And he said, {“Legion,” because many demons had entered him}.[fn] 31 {And they were begging [him][fn] not to}[fn] command them to go into the abyss.
32 There was a herd of pigs there, [a considerable number,][fn] feeding [on the mountain];[fn] and they begged him to allow them to enter {those};[fn] and {he}[fn] allowed them.
33 And the demons, having come out of the man, {entered}[fn] into the pigs; and the herd rushed down the cliff into the lake and were drowned.
34 And when the herdsmen saw [what had happened],[fn] they fled and reported it in the city and in the fields. 35 {And they came to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out},[fn] clothed and in his right mind, sitting at the feet of Jesus; [and][fn] they were afraid. 36 {And they [who saw it][fn] reported to them how the demon-possessed man had been healed}.[fn]
37 And {the whole multitude}[fn] of the region of the {Gerasenes}[fn] asked {him}[fn] to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear; but he, having entered [into {a}[fn] boat],[fn] returned.
38 [But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging him to be with him;][fn] But {he}[fn] sent him away, saying, 39 “{Return to your house and tell}[fn] what God has done [for you].”[fn]
And {he went throughout the [whole][fn] city, proclaiming what}[fn] Jesus had done for him.
40 But when Jesus was returning [[it happened that]][fn] the crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him.
41 [And behold,][fn] A man [[of the synagogue]][fn] [named Jairus][fn] came; [and he was][fn] a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at the feet of Jesus, he pleaded with him to come to his house, 42 for he had an only daughter, [about][fn] twelve years old, [and she][fn] was dying. As he was going, the crowds were pressing against him.
43 And a [[certain]][fn] woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years, [having spent all her life on physicians][fn] {was not able to be healed by anyone},[fn] 44 approaching [from behind],[fn] she touched [the fringe of][fn] his garment,[fn] and immediately her flow of blood ceased.
45 And Jesus [[knowing that power had gone out from him,]][fn] {said},[fn] “Who touched me?” When all denied it, Peter [[and those with him]][fn] said, “Master, the crowds surround you and press in on you. [[And you say, ‘Who touched me?’]]”[fn] 46 But {Jesus}[fn] said, “Someone touched me, for I knew power had gone out from me.”
47 [But the woman realizing that she had not gone unnoticed, came {trembling}[fn]][fn] and falling down at his feet, she explained in front of all [the people][fn] [why she had touched him and][fn] how she had been immediately healed. 48 And {he}[fn] said to her, “Daughter, [[take heart]][fn] your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
49 While he was still speaking, {someone}[fn] came from the synagogue leader's house, saying [[to him]],[fn] “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher.” 50 But Jesus, having heard [[the word]],[fn] responded to him [[saying]],[fn] “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be saved.”
51 {But when he came into}[fn] the house, he did not allow anyone to enter [with him],[fn] except Peter, {John, and James},[fn] and the girl's father and mother. 52 And all were weeping and mourning for her. But he said, “Do not weep, for she has not died but sleeping.” 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he [[having sent everyone out,]] [fn] taking her by the hand, called out saying, “Child, arise.”
55 And her spirit returned, [and she got up immediately,][fn] and he directed that something should be given her to eat.
56 And her parents [[observing,]][fn] were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
