Luke 23

23 And having risen, [the [whole][fn] multitude of them][fn] led him to Pilate.

2 They began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man [perverting {our}[fn] nation,][fn] forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”

3 And Pilate {asked}[fn] [him],[fn] saying, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he, answering him, said, “You say so.” 4 Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.”

5 But they insisted, saying [that],[fn] “He stirs up the people, [teaching][fn] throughout all {Judea},[fn] beginning from Galilee even to this place.”

6 When Pilate heard {this},[fn] he asked whether the man was [a Galilean].[fn] 7 And recognizing that he is under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was [also][fn] in Jerusalem during these days.

8 But Herod, seeing Jesus, rejoiced greatly, for he had wanted to see him for a long time because he had heard [[many things]][fn] about him and hoped to see some sign performed by him. 9 He questioned him with many words, but he answered him nothing.

10 The chief priests and the scribes stood there, vehemently accusing him. 11 But Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt [and][fn] mocked him. Dressing him in bright clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. 12 {That same day, Herod and Pilate became friends with one another [, for before this they had been at enmity with one another][fn]}.[fn]

13 Pilate, however, having called together the chief priests and the rulers and [[all]][fn] the people, 14 said to them, “You brought this man to me as one who was leading the people astray, and behold, I, having examined him in your presence, found nothing guilty in this man [of the charges you accuse him of].[fn] 15 But not even Herod, for {he sent him back to us};[fn] and [behold,][fn] nothing deserving of death has been done by him. 16 Therefore, having disciplined him, I will release him 17 [[for he was obligated to release one to them at the festival.]]”[fn]

18 But they all cried out together, saying, “Take this one away, [[take this one away,]][fn] and release to us Barabbas;” 19 who had been [thrown][fn] in prison for a certain insurrection in the city and for murder.

20 [[Therefore,]][fn] Again, Pilate addressed them, wanting to release Jesus. 21 But they {kept shouting}[fn] [saying],[fn] “Crucify [, Crucify][fn] him!”

22 He said to them for the third time, “What evil has this man done? [[Therefore]][fn] I found {nothing}[fn] deserving of death in him; therefore, having disciplined him, I will release him.” 23 But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that he be crucified, and {their}[fn] voices [[and those of the chief priests]][fn] prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted.

25 He released [[to them]][fn] the one who for insurrection and murder had been thrown into prison [, whom they asked for].[fn] But Jesus he handed over to their will.

26 And as they led him away, they seized a certain Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and laid on him the cross [to carry][fn] behind Jesus.

27 And a [great][fn] multitude of the people and women were following him, who were beating their breasts and mourning for him. 28 But Jesus turning to them said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, [[nor mourn,]][fn] but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For [behold],[fn] the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’[fn] 31 For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

32 And there were also two other criminals led with him to be executed. 33 And when they {came}[fn] to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals [[together]],[fn] one on the right and the other on the left. 34 [[And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing.”]][fn]

Dividing up his garments, they cast [lots][fn].[fn] 35 And the people stood by {watching. But the rulers also}[fn] [[with them]][fn] sneered, [saying,][fn] “[He saved others;][fn] Let him save himself, {if this is the Christ[fn] [[, the Son]][fn] of God, the Chosen One}.”[fn]

36 And the soldiers [also][fn] mocked him, approaching and offering him sour wine 37 [and][fn] saying, {“If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!}”[fn] [[They put on him a crown of thorns.]][fn]

38 And there was [also][fn] an inscription [[written]][fn] over him [[in Greek, Roman, and Hebrew letters]],[fn] “This is the King of the Jews.”

39 But one of the criminals [who were hanged there][fn] was blaspheming[fn] [him,][fn] [saying,][fn] “[{Are you not the Christ?}[fn] Save yourself and us].”[fn]

40 But the other, rebuking him, said, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation [[we are]]?[fn] [[And we indeed are.]][fn] 41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”

42 And [[turning towards the Lord,]][fn] he said, {“Jesus,}[fn] [[Lord]][fn] Remember me {when you come in your kingdom}.”[fn] 43 And {he}[fn] said to him, “Truly, I say to you [[that]],[fn] today you will be with me in paradise.”[fn]

44 And it was [already][fn] about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 {With the sun having faded,}[fn] the curtain of the temple was torn in two.[fn]

46 Then, calling out with a loud voice, {Jesus}[fn] said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!”[fn] And having said this, he breathed his last.

47 [But seeing what happened,][fn] The centurion glorified God, saying [[that]],[fn] “Truly this man was righteous!”

48 And all [the crowds][fn] that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw [what had happened,][fn] they returned beating their breasts [[and their foreheads]][fn] [[saying, “Woe to us for what has happened today because of our sins; for the desolation of Jerusalem has indeed drawn near.”]][fn]

49 But all his acquaintances stood at a distance, and the women who followed [him][fn] from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.

50 And behold, a man named Joseph, who was a member of the council, {[and][fn] a good [and][fn] righteous man},[fn] 51 (This man was not in agreement with their counsel and action) from the city of Arimathea of the Jews, {who}[fn] was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 {This man}[fn] approached Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

53 And having taken him down, he wrapped [[the body]][fn] [of him][fn] in a linen cloth and placed him in a {hewn tomb}[fn] {where no one had yet been laid}.[fn] [[And after placing him, he put a stone on the tomb, which barely twenty men could roll.]][fn]

54 And it was the day {of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning}.[fn] 55 But [the][fn] women who had [[also]][fn] come [with him][fn] from Galilee followed and saw the tomb [and how his body was laid].[fn] 56 Having returned, they prepared spices and ointments.

And indeed, they rested on the Sabbath [according to the commandment].[fn]
