8:40-56 These two accounts of healing demonstrate Jesus’ authority over disease and death, and illustrate the power of faith.
This section tells about two miracles that Jesus did. He healed a woman who had a sickness that caused her to have chronic menstrual bleeding. The story about this woman is told in the middle of the story about a dead girl whom Jesus caused to live again. The situation was hopeless for both until Jesus miraculously helped them. His miracles showed the special power and authority that God had given to him as the Messiah.
These stories include the concept of uncleanness, just as in the story of the healing of the man with a “legion” of unclean spirits. Here, the woman was unclean according to the law of Moses because of the bleeding that was caused by her sickness. The dead body of Jairus’ daughter was also ritually unclean. But in spite of this, Jesus touched both of them. Jesus did not become unclean himself when he touched them. Instead, he made them ritually clean by making them well.
Another important theme in this section is faith. Jesus said that the woman who was bleeding was healed because she believed that Jesus could heal her. Then he encouraged Jairus to keep believing that God could make his daughter well, even after she had died.
It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:
Jesus cured a woman with chronic bleeding and gave life to a dead girl
The child of Jairus and the woman who touched the border/edge of Jesus’ clothing
A Dead Girl and a Sick Woman (NIV)
There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 9:18–26 and Mark 5:21–43.

There is implied information here. After Jesus spoke to the people in 8:53, he went to the place where the girl’s body was lying. See Mark 5:40. In some languages it may be necessary to make this explicit. For example:
Jesus went to the place where the girl was lying and took her
But Jesus: There is a textual issue here. Following “But he,” some Greek manuscripts add the words “having put all outside and…” The KJV follows the manuscripts that include these words. The reading that does not include the words “having put all outside and…” has the earliest and strongest manuscript support. So it is recommended that you follow the BSB and the majority of English versions that do not include these words. However, if the national language version includes these words, it is recommended that you put the support for this in a footnote. For example: “Following ‘But he,’ some Greek manuscripts add the words ‘having put all outside and….’” In the Greek text, the pronoun “he,” which the BSB translates as Jesus, is emphatic. Along with the conjunction that the BSB translates as But, it indicates a contrast. The focus shifts from the people who were mocking Jesus to what Jesus did next. He went to the girl and raised her from the dead, as he had come with Jairus to do. Connect these verses in a way that is natural in your language. Another way to translate this is:
As for Jesus, he went and took
Jesus took her by the hand: The Greek expression that the BSB translates as Jesus took her by the hand means that Jesus held the hand of the girl in his own hand. Some languages may express this idea in different ways. For example:
he grasped the girl’s hand
he took her hand
Jesus was gentle as he picked up her hand and held it. Your translation should not imply that it was a forceful action. For example:
Jesus gently took her by the hand (NET)
Express this action in a natural way in your language.
and called out: The Greek verb phrase that the BSB translates as called out is literally “called saying.” The word “called” indicates that Jesus spoke in a loud voice, and the word “saying” introduces what he said. Some other ways to translate this are:
He…spoke forcefully (NASB)
Jesus…said in a loud voice (NLT)
Jesus…called to her (NCV)
Child: In the parallel passage in Mark 5:41 Jesus’ word (in another language) is translated into Greek with the meaning “little girl/lady.” Use a term of address that would be appropriate in your culture for a man kindly to address a young girl who is twelve years old.
get up: The Greek word that the BSB translates as get up can mean:
stand up from a lying or sitting position;
wake up from sleep;
live again after being dead.
Option (c) is the clearest in this context. It emphasizes that Jesus was telling a dead person to live again. This is important in cultures where the other options might imply that the girl was not really dead, but asleep (8:52). However, option (a) is appropriate when it implies that the girl had been dead, as well as lying down. Some languages may have a word like the English word “rise” that can be used for all three meanings. If that is true in your language, it may be a good choice here.
