TSNTyndale Study Notes:

8:40-56 These two accounts of healing demonstrate Jesus’ authority over disease and death, and illustrate the power of faith.

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 8:40–56: Jesus healed a sick woman and caused a dead girl to live again

This section tells about two miracles that Jesus did. He healed a woman who had a sickness that caused her to have chronic menstrual bleeding. The story about this woman is told in the middle of the story about a dead girl whom Jesus caused to live again. The situation was hopeless for both until Jesus miraculously helped them. His miracles showed the special power and authority that God had given to him as the Messiah.

These stories include the concept of uncleanness, just as in the story of the healing of the man with a “legion” of unclean spirits. Here, the woman was unclean according to the law of Moses because of the bleeding that was caused by her sickness. The dead body of Jairus’ daughter was also ritually unclean. But in spite of this, Jesus touched both of them. Jesus did not become unclean himself when he touched them. Instead, he made them ritually clean by making them well.

Another important theme in this section is faith. Jesus said that the woman who was bleeding was healed because she believed that Jesus could heal her. Then he encouraged Jairus to keep believing that God could make his daughter well, even after she had died.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus cured a woman with chronic bleeding and gave life to a dead girl

The child of Jairus and the woman who touched the border/edge of Jesus’ clothing

A Dead Girl and a Sick Woman (NIV)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 9:18–26 and Mark 5:21–43.

8:46a

But Jesus declared, “Someone touched Me,

But: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as But introduces Jesus’ response to Peter. Here there is also a contrast between 8:45 and 8:46. In 8:45, Peter implied that many people were touching Jesus, so it was useless for Jesus to look for any particular person who touched him. But in 8:46, Jesus explained that he was referring to a different kind of touching than the accidental touching of a crowd. Connect these verses in a natural way in your language.

Someone touched Me: Jesus meant that someone had intentionally touched him for a special reason. He was not asking who touched him accidentally, as people are touched in the middle of a crowd.

8:46b

for I know that power has gone out from Me.”

for: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as for introduces an explanation. Jesus explained the reason for his question in 8:45a, “Who touched me?” Connect these verses in a way that is natural in your language.

I know that power has gone out from Me: Jesus probably knew that power had gone out of him because he felt it in some way (see Mark 5:30). In some languages it may be natural to use a word that indicates this. For example:

I sense/sensed power going out from me

I perceive that virtue is gone out of me (KJV)

I felt power go out from me (NCV)

that power has gone out from Me: In this context, the word power refers to Jesus’ power to heal people or work other miracles. It does not refer to physical strength. You may want to make this clear. For example:

healing power (NLT)

power to work/do miracles

Be careful not to imply that Jesus had no power left or that he had less power than he had before. One way to avoid that in English is:

I felt some power go out from me

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἥψατό μού τις

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν ἥψατο μού Τὶς ἐγώ γάρ ἔγνων δύναμιν ἐξεληλυθυῖαν ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ)

The implication is that Jesus means someone reached out and touched him intentionally. He is not referring to the accidental jostling of the crowd. Alternate translation: [Someone deliberately touched me]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐγὼ & ἔγνων δύναμιν ἐξεληλυθυῖαν ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν ἥψατο μού Τὶς ἐγώ γάρ ἔγνων δύναμιν ἐξεληλυθυῖαν ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ)

Jesus did not lose power or become weak. Rather, he recognized that power had gone out from him and healed someone. Alternate translation: [I felt power go out from me and heal someone]
