Moysen etiam laudat: sed illos rebelles et semper inobedientes comprobat. Sed arte loquendi usus est ad rebelles, incipiens quasi timeret eos: sic, Viri fratres et patres: lenis sermo et clemens conciliat auditorem, ut commendet actorem. Blande cœpit, ut diu audiretur, et qui recusabat contra Deum, et legem loqui, verum Deum prædicat in principio orationis. Legem etiam sic exposuit, ut ejus esset prædicator cujus accusabatur destructor: in processu etiam sermonis errores eorum redarguens, vigorem animi, et quod liber erat a timore inimici perdocuit. 7.2 Viri fratres and patres. Stephen is using the word brothers to refer to his fellow Israelites. He is likely using the word fathers to refer to the leaders of Israel, the members of the Sanhedrin. In both cases he is speaking respectfully. Alternate translation: “My fellow Israelites and you leaders of Israel”

If it would be clearer in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun glory with an adjective such as “glorious.” Alternate translation: “The glorious God” or “God, who is glorious,” or see the next note for a further possibility.

Stephen apparently chooses to describe God in this way at the beginning of his speech in order to refute the charge made in 6:11 that he says blasphemous things about God. Calling him the God of glory acknowledges that people should rightfully give glory to God. You might choose to bring out this implication in your translation. Alternate translation: “God, to whom we should rightfully give glory,”

Here and throughout this chapter, Stephen is using the word our to refer to himself and to his listeners, so use the inclusive form of that word if your language marks that distinction.
