TSNTyndale Study Notes:

8:1-36 In Exod 28–29, the Lord gave Moses specific instructions for clothing and for ordaining Aaron and his sons as priests. In Exod 39:1-31; 40:12-16; and Lev 8, the commands were carried out. Moses didn’t just pass along the instructions verbally; he enacted the rituals to provide an example for the priests down to the last detail, just as the Lord had commanded him (8:9, 13, 17, 21, 29). Because the penalty for disobedience was death, God made sure the priests knew exactly what to do.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וַיִּתֵּ֣ן אֶת־הַכֹּ֔ל עַ֚ל כַּפֵּ֣י אַהֲרֹ֔ן וְעַ֖ל כַּפֵּ֣י בָנָ֑יו

and=he/it_gave DOM the,all on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in hands ʼAhₐron and,on palms sons,his

See how you translated this idiom in 8:7.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֶת־הַכֹּ֔ל

DOM the,all

Here, the whole refers to the fat portions, the right thigh, and all of the loaves of bread. If it would be helpful, consider making the referent explicit. Alternate translation: “all the portions of fat, the right thigh, and the loaves of bread”

Note 3 topic: translate-unknown

כַּפֵּ֣י אַהֲרֹ֔ן & כַּפֵּ֣י בָנָ֑יו

hands ʼAhₐron & palms sons,his

The palm is the flat part of the inside of one’s hand. If your language has a word for this part of the hand, consider using it here. If not, consider using a generic expression. Alternate translation: ”the open hands of Aaron … the open hands of his sons”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיָּ֧נֶף אֹתָ֛ם תְּנוּפָ֖ה

and,waved DOM=them wave_offering

Although the subject is not named, because it is usually the person offering the sacrifice who is authorized to dedicate the portions of the sacrifice to Yahweh by waving them in his presence, it is likely that he here refers to Aaron and his sons. This is further clarified by the fact that Moses placed the portions of fat, the right thigh, and the loaves of bread in the open palms of Aaron and his sons. If it would be helpful in your language, consider making the referent explicit. Alternate translation: “and Aaron and his sons waved them as a wave offering”

Note 5 topic: translate-unknown

וַיָּ֧נֶף אֹתָ֛ם תְּנוּפָ֖ה

and,waved DOM=them wave_offering

See how you translated this symbolic action and its corresponding type of offering in 7:30.

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_gave DOM the,all on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in hands ʼAhₐron and,on palms sons,his and,waved DOM=them wave_offering to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH )

Here, the expression to the face of Yahweh means “toward the presence of Yahweh.” It indicates that Moses waved the loaves and the wafer in the direction of the Most Holy Place, where Yahweh lived among the Israelites. If it would be helpful to your readers, consider stating this plainly. Alternate translation: “in the direction of the Most Holy Place where Yahweh lived among the Israelites”
