TSNTyndale Study Notes:

8:1-36 In Exod 28–29, the Lord gave Moses specific instructions for clothing and for ordaining Aaron and his sons as priests. In Exod 39:1-31; 40:12-16; and Lev 8, the commands were carried out. Moses didn’t just pass along the instructions verbally; he enacted the rituals to provide an example for the priests down to the last detail, just as the Lord had commanded him (8:9, 13, 17, 21, 29). Because the penalty for disobedience was death, God made sure the priests knew exactly what to do.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular

תֵֽצְאוּ֙ & מִלֻּאֵיכֶ֑ם & אֶת־יֶדְכֶֽם׃

go_outside & ordination,your_all's &DOM (Some words not found in UHB: and,from,entrance tent/house meeting not go_outside seven days until day completed days_of ordination,your_all's that/for/because/then/when seven days he_will_fill DOM hand_of,you_all )

The pronounsyou and your are plural here. They refer to Aaron and his sons, so use the plural form in your translation if your language marks that distinction.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / declarative

לֹ֤א תֵֽצְאוּ֙

not go_outside

This expression uses a future statement to give an instruction or command. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate these words using a command or instruction form. Alternate translation: “you should not go out” or “you must not go out”

Note 3 topic: writing-poetry

עַ֚ד י֣וֹם מְלֹ֔את יְמֵ֖י מִלֻּאֵיכֶ֑ם

until day completed days_of ordination,your_all's

Words from the same root are being repeated in a poetic word-play. The words filling and ordination come from the same root as the verbal expression he will fill. If your language has similarly related words that would convey these meanings, consider using them here. If not, consider stating the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “until the day when your ordination is filled up because, during those seven days, he will fill up your hands”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

יְמֵ֖י מִלֻּאֵיכֶ֑ם

days_of ordination,your_all's

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word ordination, you can express the same idea with a verbal form. Alternate translation: “the days when you are being ordained as priests in service to Yahweh”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

כִּ֚י שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֔ים יְמַלֵּ֖א אֶת־יֶדְכֶֽם׃

that/for/because/then/when seven days he_will_fill DOM (Some words not found in UHB: and, from, entrance tent/house meeting not go_outside seven days until day completed days_of ordination,your_all's that/for/because/then/when seven days he_will_fill DOM hand_of,you_all )

The expression he will fill your hand is an idiom that means to induct someone into the ministry and responsibilities of the priesthood. According to this verse, it will take seven days for Yahweh to induct Aaron and his sons into the priesthood. (See Exodus 28:41 and Exodus 29:9 for representative examples.) If this would not be clear to your readers, consider stating the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “because it will take seven days for Yahweh to give you the responsibilities of the priesthood and dedicate you as priests”

Note 6 topic: writing-pronouns

יְמַלֵּ֖א אֶת־יֶדְכֶֽם׃

he_will_fill DOM (Some words not found in UHB: and, from, entrance tent/house meeting not go_outside seven days until day completed days_of ordination,your_all's that/for/because/then/when seven days he_will_fill DOM hand_of,you_all )

Here the pronoun he refers to Yahweh. If this would not be clear to your readers, consider making the referent explicit. Alternate translation: “Yahweh will fill your hand”
