UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular

תֵּשְׁב֨וּ &  וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֛ם &  וְלֹ֣א תָמ֑וּתוּ

remain & and,keep & and=not die

Here, the pronoun you is plural. It refers to Aaron and his sons, so use the plural form in your translation if your language marks that distinction.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / declarative

תֵּשְׁב֨וּ &  וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֛ם

remain & and,keep

These expressions use a future statement to give an instruction or command. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate these words using a command or instruction form. Alternate translation: “you must stay … and you must keep” or “you should stay … and you should keep”

Note 3 topic: writing-poetry

וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֛ם אֶת־מִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת יְהוָ֖ה

and,keep DOM charge YHWH

Words from the same root are repeated for emphasis. The word watch is from the same root as the verb keep. You may be able to use the same construction in your language to express the meaning here. Alternatively, your language may have another way of showing the emphasis.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֛ם אֶת־מִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת יְהוָ֖ה

and,keep DOM charge YHWH

To keep the watch of Yahweh does not mean to stand and guard the entrance to the sacred tent. Rather, the expression means to carefully avoid his prohibitions, the things Yahweh has commanded his people not to do. If this meaning would not be clear, consider stating the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “and you will carefully keep Yahweh’s instructions about what you are not to do”

Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

וְלֹ֣א תָמ֑וּתוּ

and=not die

The word and here indicates that what follows is a result of what came before. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a result of what came before. It may be helpful to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation, with a period before: “If you do this, you will not die”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

כִּי־כֵ֖ן צֻוֵּֽיתִי׃

that/for/because/then/when so (Some words not found in UHB: and, entrance tent/house meeting remain day and, night seven days and, keep DOM charge YHWH and=not die that/for/because/then/when so commanded )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “because thus Yahweh commanded me”

Note 7 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

כִּי־כֵ֖ן צֻוֵּֽיתִי׃

that/for/because/then/when so (Some words not found in UHB: and, entrance tent/house meeting remain day and, night seven days and, keep DOM charge YHWH and=not die that/for/because/then/when so commanded )

The word translated as because indicates that what follows is a reason for what came before. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a reason for what came before. Alternate translation, with a period before: “You should do all this because thus I have been commanded”

Note 8 topic: writing-pronouns

צֻוֵּֽיתִי׃

(Some words not found in UHB: and, entrance tent/house meeting remain day and, night seven days and, keep DOM charge YHWH and=not die that/for/because/then/when so commanded )

Here the pronoun I refers to Moses. If this would not be clear in your language, consider making the referent explicit. Alternate translation: “I, Moses, have been commanded”
