SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:1–11: Simon and some other fishermen became disciples of Jesus

In this section, Simon Peter and some of his fishing companions heard Jesus teach. They saw his power revealed through a miraculous catch of fish. As a result, they left their fishing work and began following Jesus as his disciples.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus called Simon and other fishermen to become his disciples

Jesus’ first disciples

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 4:18–22 and Mark 1:16–20.

5:1a

On one occasion, while Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret

On one occasion: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as On one occasion is literally “And it happened.” This phrase introduces the beginning of a new story. Many English versions translate this by “one day.” Other English versions (such as the RSV) do not translate this phrase. Introduce this story in a way that is natural in your language.

while Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret: This clause gives some background information. It tells where Jesus was. When this story happened, Jesus was by Lake Gennesaret.

was standing: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as was standing can also simply mean “was.”BDAG says: “ἵστημι to be at a place, stand (there), be (there), w. the emphasis less on ‘standing’ than on ‘being, existing’” (pp. 482–483). Here the focus is probably on Jesus’ location. He was by Lake Gennesaret. His posture is probably not in focus. Other ways to translate this are:

Jesus was near Lake Gennesaret

Jesus was by Lake Gennesaret

the Lake of Gennesaret: The Lake of Gennesaret is another name for the lake that is also called the “Sea of Galilee” or “Lake Galilee.”This lake had three different names. Matthew, Mark, and John called it the “Sea of Galilee.” In John, this lake is also called the “Sea of Tiberias” (John 6:1, 21:1). Luke never called this lake the “Sea/Lake of Galilee.” He called it the “Lake of Gennesaret” or simply “the lake” (Luke 8:22–23). It was a large inland body of fresh water (about 21 kilometers long and 11 kilometers wide). This is the only text in the Bible that refers to this lake by this name.

Here are other ways to translate the name of this lake:

If you translate this as Lake Gennesaret, you may wish to add a footnote saying something like:

Lake Gennesaret is another name for Lake Galilee.

If you translate this as Lake Galilee, you may wish to add a footnote saying:

The Greek text literally says “the Lake of Gennesaret.” This was another name for Lake Galilee.

5:1b

with the crowd pressing in on Him to hear the word of God,

with the crowd pressing in on Him to hear the word of God: This part of the verse gives further background information. It sets the scene for the story that follows.

with the crowd pressing in on Him: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as with the crowd pressing in on Him is literally “while the crowd pressed upon him.” All the people wanted to hear what Jesus said. They pushed in as close to him as they could. This made it hard for him to teach.

Some other ways to translate this are:

the people pushed their way up to him (GNT)

great crowds pressed in on him (NLT)

to hear the word of God: The phrase to hear the word of God implies that the people listened to Jesus teach the word/that message God gave him. In some languages, it may be necessary to say “teach” explicitly. For example:

teaching the people as they crowded around him to hear God’s message (CEV)

God: For help in translating the word God, see the note at 1:6b.

General Comment on 5:1a–b

Some English versions follow the Greek word order more closely than the BSB. For example:

1bWhile the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, 1ahe was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. (RSV)

Use the most natural order in your language to introduce background information.

See the General Comment on 5:1–2 at the end of the notes on 5:2c for a suggestion about how to shorten the length of this sentence.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

ἐγένετο δὲ

˱it˲_became (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐγένετο Δέ ἐν τῷ τόν ὄχλον ἐπικεῖσθαι αὐτῷ καί ἀκούειν τόν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ καί αὐτός ἦν ἑστώς παρά τήν λίμνην Γεννησαρέτ)

Luke uses this phrase to introduce a new event in the story. Use a word, phrase, or other method in your language that is natural for introducing a new event.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ἀκούειν τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ

˓to_be˒_hearing (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐγένετο Δέ ἐν τῷ τόν ὄχλον ἐπικεῖσθαι αὐτῷ καί ἀκούειν τόν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ καί αὐτός ἦν ἑστώς παρά τήν λίμνην Γεννησαρέτ)

Here, Luke uses word to describe the things that Jesus said by using words. Alternate translation: [listening to the message Jesus was bringing from God]

Note 3 topic: translate-names

τὴν λίμνην Γεννησαρέτ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐγένετο Δέ ἐν τῷ τόν ὄχλον ἐπικεῖσθαι αὐτῷ καί ἀκούειν τόν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ καί αὐτός ἦν ἑστώς παρά τήν λίμνην Γεννησαρέτ)

Lake of Gennesaret is another name for the body of water also known as the Sea of Galilee. Galilee was on the west side of this lake, and the land of Gennesaret was on the east side, so it was called by both names. Some English versions translate this as the proper name of the body of water. Alternate translation: [Lake Gennesaret] or [the Sea of Galilee]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:1-11 This is the first call of disciples recorded in Luke; Matthew and Mark recount a (presumably earlier) call of the four fishermen brothers (Matt 4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20). Jesus demonstrated extraordinary authority in the miraculous catch of fish and in his call of Simon Peter.

OET (OET-RV)One time when the crowd was pressuring Yeshua that they wanted to hear God’s message as he stood by Lake Galilee,

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
