Section 5:27–32: Jesus chose Levi to become one of his disciples

In this section, Jesus asked a man named Levi to be his disciple. For the meaning of “disciple,” see the note at 5:30a.

Levi was a tax collector. Jews hated tax collectors for at least two reasons:

Tax collectors worked for the Roman government or for Herod’s government. These were foreign governments that ruled the Jews.
Tax collectors sometimes collected more money than necessary. Then they kept the extra money and became rich.

This story also tells about another conflict that Jesus had with the Jewish religious leaders. After Levi became Jesus’ disciple, Jesus came to have dinner at his house. Levi’s friends, who were also tax collectors or other sinners, also came to the dinner. During the dinner, the religious leaders criticized Jesus for associating with such people. Jesus answered that it is people who know they are sinners who need him, not people who believe themselves to be righteous.

So/Then Levi stood up, left/abandoned his way of life as a tax collector, and he became Jesus’ disciple.

and: In Greek, a conjunction that the BSB literally translates as and connects 5:27c and 5:28. However, 5:28 is the result of Jesus’ command in 5:27c. So in some languages, it may more natural to introduce this result with a different conjunction. For example:

In other languages, no conjunction may be necessary here.

Levi got up, left everything, and followed Him: In Greek, the phrase that the BSB translates as got up, left everything, and followed Him is literally “abandoning all things, rising up, he followed him.”

In English, it is not natural to say “he abandoned everything” before saying “he got up.” For this reason, a number of English versions, including the BSB, have changed the order.

left everything: The phrase left everything in this context means “left/abandoned his work as a tax collector.” It appears from the following verses that Levi still had his own house and personal money.

This phrase emphasizes Levi’s commitment to follow Jesus. See also the note on “left everything” at 5:11b.

followed Him: In this context the phrase followed Him indicates that Levi became a disciple of Jesus. See the note on “Follow me” at 5:27c.
