TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:29 with Jesus as the guest of honor: Matthew introduced Jesus to his friends and colleagues to honor Jesus for calling him as a disciple. It was common in the ancient world to repay honor with honor.

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:27–32: Jesus chose Levi to become one of his disciples

In this section, Jesus asked a man named Levi to be his disciple. For the meaning of “disciple,” see the note at 5:30a.

Levi was a tax collector. Jews hated tax collectors for at least two reasons:

  1. Tax collectors worked for the Roman government or for Herod’s government. These were foreign governments that ruled the Jews.

  2. Tax collectors sometimes collected more money than necessary. Then they kept the extra money and became rich.

This story also tells about another conflict that Jesus had with the Jewish religious leaders. After Levi became Jesus’ disciple, Jesus came to have dinner at his house. Levi’s friends, who were also tax collectors or other sinners, also came to the dinner. During the dinner, the religious leaders criticized Jesus for associating with such people. Jesus answered that it is people who know they are sinners who need him, not people who believe themselves to be righteous.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus called Levi to be his disciple and ate with sinners

Jesus loves sinners

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 9:9–13 and Mark 2:13–17.

5:29a

Then Levi hosted a great banquet for Jesus at his house.

Then: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as Then is literally “And.” It introduces what happened next in the story. Some other ways to connect this paragraph to 5:28 are:

Later (NLT)

Afterwards (REB)

Levi hosted a great banquet for Jesus: The phrase Levi hosted a great banquet for Jesus means “Levi invited many people to come and eat a meal to honor Jesus.” Levi was the host of the banquet.

banquet: The Greek word that the BSB translates as banquet refers to a large meal. Some other ways to translate this word are:

big dinner (CEV)

big feast (GNT)

big reception (REB)

for Jesus: The phrase for Jesus here means that Jesus was invited to the banquet as the guest of honor. Levi had the feast in order to honor Jesus in the presence of all the other guests. For example:

with Jesus as the guest of honor (NLT)

5:29b

A large crowd of tax collectors was there, along with others who were eating with them.

tax collectors: The term tax collectors also occurs in 5:27b. See the note there.

along with others: The Greek word the BSB translates as others refers to “other people.” It refers generally to other people whom Levi knew. It includes Jesus’ disciples. Translate this word in a general way.Matthew (Matthew 9:10) and Mark (Mark 2:15) refer to these “others” as “sinners.” But because Jesus’ disciples were also included in this group, it is best to translate the word “others” in a generic way. For example:

other people (GNT)

other guests (NLT)

were eating: The Greek word that the BSB translates as were eating is literally “were reclining” (as in the NASB). The Jews usually ate at low tables while reclining on the floor (on cushions). This is not the custom in many parts of the world, and the posture is not in focus here. So most English versions translate this with more general expressions. For example:

sitting at table (RSV)

were eating (NCV)

ate (NLT)

with them: The word them probably refers to Levi, the host, and to Jesus, the honored guest.

In this culture, the manner of eating at a feast was to lie on a couch and prop oneself up with the left arm on some pillows. Alternate translation: [lying on banqueting couches]
