TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:1-11 This is the first call of disciples recorded in Luke; Matthew and Mark recount a (presumably earlier) call of the four fishermen brothers (Matt 4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20). Jesus demonstrated extraordinary authority in the miraculous catch of fish and in his call of Simon Peter.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

θάμβος & περιέσχεν αὐτὸν καὶ πάντας τοὺς σὺν αὐτῷ

amazement & seized him and all the_‹ones› with him

Luke describes Peter’s amazement as if it were something that could actively take hold of him. Alternate translation: [he and the other fishermen were completely amazed]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τῇ ἄγρᾳ τῶν ἰχθύων

the catch ˱of˲_the fishes

The implication is that this was a very large catch. Alternate translation: [the great number of fish]
