Valuations of vows to Yahweh

This is still a very early look into the unfinished text of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check the text in advance before using in public.

Literal Version

27:1 Valuations of vows to Yahweh

27Then Yahweh told Mosheh:

2Tell the Israelis that when someone makes a special vow to offer someone to Yahweh, 3a man between twenty and sixty will be valued at fifty silver coins (according to the sanctuary standard weights) 4and a woman at thirty coins. 5If it’s someone between five and twenty, then it’s twenty silver coins for a male and ten for a female. 6Between one month old and five years, it’s five silver coins for a male and three for a female. 7For sixty years old and older, it’s fifteen silver coins for a male and ten for a female.

8If the maker of the vow can’t afford the valuation, then that person must stand in front of the priest and give an account, and then the priest can set a value that they can afford.

9If it’s an animal that they’re promising as a gift for Yahweh, then that animal becomes sacred10it can’t be exchanged for a different one (either better or worse), but if it does get substituted, then both animals will become sacred. 11Any ‘unclean’ animal cannot be presented to Yahweh, so if that’s what was promised, the person must take the animal to the priest, 12and a priest must give a fair valuation according to the quality of the animal—the priest’s decision will be final. 13However, if it’s later bought back, then an extra twenty percent must be added to that valuation.

14If someone dedicates their house as sacred to Yahweh, a priest must value it according to its quality—the priest’s decision will be final. 15However, if that person decides to buy back their house, then an extra twenty percent must be added to the valuation and then it can be theirs again.

16If someone dedicates part of their farmland as sacred to Yahweh, then it will be valued according to how much seed would be sown in itfifty silver coins for each 130kg of barley seed required. 17That would be its value if it was dedicated during the restoration celebration year, 18but in the years following, the priest must calculate the field’s value depending on how many years remain before the next rest year. 19However, if that person decides to buy back their land, then an extra twenty percent must be added to the valuation and then it can be theirs again. 20If the person doesn’t buy back the field but sells it to someone else, then it can’t be bought back again. 21Then when the field is released at the next rest year, it will be sacred to Yahweh and the priests will take ownership.

22If someone dedicates to Yahweh some land that they’ve bought (i.e., it’s not part of their clan inheritance), 23then a priest must calculate the valuation until the next restoration celebration year, and it must be paid that same day —becoming sacred to Yahweh. 24In that rest year, the land will return to the original owner who has it as part of their clan inheritance.

25All valuations will be calculated using the standard weights from the sanctuary—the silver coin must weigh twelve grams.

26Every firstborn domestic animal (including cows and sheep) automatically belongs to Yahweh, and no person can claim to ‘dedicate’ it. 27However, if it’s an ‘unclean’ animal then it must be bought back by paying its valuation plus an additional twenty percent, but if it’s not bought back, then it must be sold at its valuation price.

28If someone dedicates something to Yahweh that they own (e.g., a man or an animal, or a field), they can’t then sell it or buy it straight back—everything that’s dedicated like that becomes sacred to Yahweh.[ref]

29Any person who’s dedicated for destruction cannot be bought back—they must be executed.

30A tenth of all the harvests from the crops and fruit from the trees, belongs to Yahweh. It’s sacred to Yahweh.[ref] 31If someone really wanted to buy back their tenth of their produce, an additional twenty percent must be added to the valuation. 32Every tenth animal of the mustered domestic cattle and sheep and goats, is sacred to Yahweh. 33The herder mustn’t pick out good or bad ones, or make substitutions. (If a substitution was made, both animals then become sacred and must not be bought back.)

34The above are the instructions and rules that Yahweh gave Mosheh at Mt. Sinai for the Israelis.
