TSNTyndale Study Notes:

15:1-33 The principle of normal and abnormal and the created order again aids the interpretation of these regulations (see “Clean, Unclean, and Holy” Theme Note). Bodily discharges, such as infections (see study note on 13:1-46), were not “normal” because they weakened the vitality of the person, so the person was not seen as whole. Whether male (15:1-18) or female (15:19-33), such a person became unclean.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular

וְהִזַּרְתֶּ֥ם

and,keep_~_separate

Here, you is plural. It refers to Aaron and Moses, so use the plural form in your translation if your language marks that distinction.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

אֶת־ בְּנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

DOM sons_of Yisrael

See how you handled this way of referring to the people of Israel in 1:2.

Note 3 topic: writing-poetry

מִטֻּמְאָתָ֑ם & בְּטֻמְאָתָ֔ם בְּטַמְּאָ֥ם

from,uncleanness,their & in/on/at/with,uncleanness,their in/on/at/with,defiling,their

Words are being repeated for emphasis. Specifically, the word uncleanness comes from a noun that is related to the verb defiling. You may be able to use the same construction in your language to express the meaning here. Alternatively, your language may have another way of showing the emphasis.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

מִטֻּמְאָתָ֑ם

from,uncleanness,their

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word uncleanness, you can express the same idea with “unclean.” Alternate translation: “from becoming unclean”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

וְלֹ֤א יָמֻ֨תוּ֙ בְּטֻמְאָתָ֔ם בְּטַמְּאָ֥ם אֶת־מִשְׁכָּנִ֖י אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּתוֹכָֽם׃

and=not die in/on/at/with,uncleanness,their in/on/at/with,defiling,their DOM tabernacle,my which/who (Some words not found in UHB: and,keep_~_separate DOM sons_of Yisrael from,uncleanness,their and=not die in/on/at/with,uncleanness,their in/on/at/with,defiling,their DOM tabernacle,my which/who in/on/at/with,midst,them )

These two phrases mean basically the same thing. The repetition emphasizes that the people of Israel will die if they defile God’s holy place. If your language does not use repetition for emphasis, you could use a single phrase and convey the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: “and they will not die when they are unclean and defile my Dwelling that is in their midst”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֶת־מִשְׁכָּנִ֖י אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּתוֹכָֽם׃

DOM DOM tabernacle,my which/who (Some words not found in UHB: and,keep_~_separate DOM sons_of Yisrael from,uncleanness,their and=not die in/on/at/with,uncleanness,their in/on/at/with,defiling,their DOM tabernacle,my which/who in/on/at/with,midst,them )

This expression refers to the tent of meeting, where Yahweh lived among the Israelites. If this would not be clear to your readers, consider stating the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “the holy place where I live in their midst”
