TSNTyndale Study Notes:

21:31 All these things refers to the events described in 21:25-30.

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 21:5–38: Jesus taught about what would happen in the future

After the events of the preceding section, some of Jesus’ disciples were admiring the beautiful stones and gifts that people used to adorn the Temple. Jesus told them that one day the Temple would be completely destroyed. Enemies would attack Jerusalem and destroy the Temple. In A.D. 70, the Jews rebelled against the Romans, and the Roman destroyed the temple. Jesus also told them about other things that would happen in the future. He told them that after these things happened, he would return to earth in power and great glory. He warned his disciples to pray so that they would be able to endure the future troubles and be ready to meet him when he comes again.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some examples of other headings are:

The Jerusalem temple would soon be destroyed

The destruction of the temple and the coming times of trouble

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 24:1–35 and Mark 13:1–31.

21:31a

So also, when you see these things happening,

So also, when you see these things happening: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as So also means “in the same way, likewise.” It introduces a comparison. People look at new leaves and know that summer will soon come. In the same way, Jesus’ disciples will see the signs that Jesus told them, and they will know that the kingdom of God is near. Another way to translate 21:31a is:

Thus also when you see those happenings [mentioned] earlierUma back translation on TW.

you: The pronoun you refers here to Jesus’ disciples who will be alive when he returns to earth. Since Jesus has not yet returned, it refers to everyone who will be trusting and following him at that time. It does not refer only to his first disciples.

these things: The phrase these things refers to the signs that Jesus mentioned in 21:25–26. Other ways to refer to them here are:

the signs that I have told you about

these terrible events

Refer back to them in a natural way in your language.

21:31b

know that the kingdom of God is near.

know: There are two ways to interpret the Greek verb that the BSB translates as know in this context:

  1. It is a statement. The signs will make the disciples able to know that the kingdom is near. For example:

you can be equally sure (JBP)

you will know (GNT) (NIV, RSV, GW, GNT, CEV, NCV, REB, ESV, NLT, JBP)

  2. It is a command. When the disciples see the signs, they should realize or understand that the kingdom is near. Here is another way to translate this:

recognize (NASB) (BSB, NASB, KJV, NJB, NET)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1).

the kingdom of God is near: This clause means that the kingdom of God will soon appear or begin. God will soon begin to rule his people.

The phrase kingdom of God refers to God’s activity of ruling and caring for his people as their king. It does not refer to a land or country that he rules over. It refers to the relationship that he has with his people. He leads, protects, and cares for them. They obey, trust, and submit to him as their king.

Some ways to translate this clause are:

God’s rule/reign will soon begin

it will not be much longer before God rules all people as king

the time when God will care for his people as king is near

See how you translated this in 17:20. See also kingdom of God in the Glossary.

Alternate translation: [the signs I have just described]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐγγύς ἐστιν ἡ Βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ

near (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὕτως καί ὑμεῖς ὅταν ἴδητε ταῦτα γινόμενα γινώσκετε ὅτι ἐγγύς ἐστίν ἡ Βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ)

See how you decided to translate the phrase the kingdom of God in [4:43](../04/43.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun kingdom with a verb such as “rule.” Alternate translation: [God will soon begin to rule as king]
