TSNTyndale Study Notes:

21:5-38 When Jesus predicted the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem (21:6), his disciples questioned when it would take place and what signs would accompany it (21:7). Jesus responded by describing the events surrounding the destruction of the Temple and the return of the Son of Man (21:8-36). This sermon is known as the Olivet Discourse because the Mount of Olives was the site of Jesus’ teaching (see Matt 24:3; Mark 13:3).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-symaction

ἀνακύψατε καὶ ἐπάρατε τὰς κεφαλὰς ὑμῶν

straighten_up and lift_up the heads ˱of˲_you_all

Jesus tells his disciples to assume this posture rather than fearfully crouching down and looking down, to demonstrate their confidence that God is coming to deliver them. Alternate translation: “confidently stand up straight and hold your heads high”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

διότι ἐγγίζει ἡ ἀπολύτρωσις ὑμῶν

because /is/_nearing the redemption ˱of˲_you_all

Jesus is speaking of God as if he himself were the redemption that he is going to bring. Alternate translation: “because God will soon redeem you”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

διότι ἐγγίζει ἡ ἀπολύτρωσις ὑμῶν

because /is/_nearing the redemption ˱of˲_you_all

If it would be helpful in your language, you could represent the idea behind the abstract noun redemption with a verb such as “redeem.” Alternate translation: “because God will soon redeem you”
