21:22 For those will be days of God’s vengeance: The destruction of Jerusalem was part of God’s judgment for Israel’s rejection of the Messiah.
After the events of the preceding section, some of Jesus’ disciples were admiring the beautiful stones and gifts that people used to adorn the Temple. Jesus told them that one day the Temple would be completely destroyed. Enemies would attack Jerusalem and destroy the Temple. In A.D. 70, the Jews rebelled against the Romans, and the Roman destroyed the temple. Jesus also told them about other things that would happen in the future. He told them that after these things happened, he would return to earth in power and great glory. He warned his disciples to pray so that they would be able to endure the future troubles and be ready to meet him when he comes again.
It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some examples of other headings are:
The Jerusalem temple would soon be destroyed
The destruction of the temple and the coming times of trouble
There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 24:1–35 and Mark 13:1–31.
In this paragraph Jesus began a new topic. In 21:12–19 he had talked about the persecution that his disciples would endure before the end. In this paragraph Jesus talked about the future time when an army would attack the city of Jerusalem and destroy it.It is possible that this passage will have two fulfillments. The first application referred to the time when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in 70 A.D. This happened about forty years after people had crucified Jesus. Many Christians think that Jerusalem will be attacked again in the last days of this age. This would be a second fulfillment of this prediction. Jesus warned his disciples to escape when they saw armies gathering around Jerusalem.
For these are the days of vengeance,
I say this because that will be the time of punishment for sins.
For at this time God will punish the people of Jerusalem
For: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as For introduces the basis or reason for the commands that Jesus gave in 21:21. Other ways to translate this conjunction are:
because (NET)
I say that because
these are the days of vengeance: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as these are the days of vengeance is literally “days of vengeance these are.” The phrase days of vengeance is emphasized.
Prophets who lived during the time of the Old Testament warned that God would punish his people because they disobeyed him and rebelled against him. On some occasions God used the phrase days of vengeance or “the day” to describe the time when He would punish His people. (See Hosea 9:7 and Malachi 4:1.) God would also specifically punish them for rejecting Jesus as the Christ/Messiah whom God had sent to them, as 19:44 indicates.
In some languages it may be necessary to translate vengeance as a verb and to make explicit both the subject and the object. For example:
this is the time when God will punish the people of Jerusalem
At this time God will punish people
to fulfill all that is written.
This punishment will fulfill all that the prophets have written about it.
and all the warnings written in the Scriptures will be proved true.
to fulfill: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as to fulfill is literally “are to be fulfilled.” The verb fulfill means “to make/cause to truly happen.” Here it indicates that what happens during “the time of punishment/vengeance” will cause everything that was written in the Scriptures about it to happen as the Scriptures said. Other ways to translate this word are:
to make come true (GNT)
will come true (GW)
so that it may happen as predicted
all that is written: The phrase all that is written refers to everything that the prophets wrote in Scripture. It refers specifically here to all the writings about the time when armies would attack and destroy Jerusalem. Another way to translate this is:
all that the prophets wrote about this
Jesus may have been referring to passages such as 1 Kings 9:6–9, Daniel 9:26, Hosea 9:7 and Micah 3:12.When the Babylonians and other enemies destroyed Jerusalem hundreds of years before Jesus’ time, that destruction partially fulfilled some OT prophecies. But Jesus spoke here about how such prophecies would be fulfilled perhaps in an even greater way when armies would again attack and destroy Jerusalem.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
ἡμέραι ἐκδικήσεως αὗταί εἰσιν
days ˱of˲_vengeance (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι ἡμέραι ἐκδικήσεως αὗται εἰσίν τοῦ πλησθῆναι παντᾶ τά γεγραμμένα)
Jesus is using the term days to refer to a specific time. Alternate translation: [this will be the time when God punishes this city]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
ἡμέραι ἐκδικήσεως αὗταί εἰσιν
days ˱of˲_vengeance (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι ἡμέραι ἐκδικήσεως αὗται εἰσίν τοῦ πλησθῆναι παντᾶ τά γεγραμμένα)
If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun vengeance with a verb such as “punish.” Alternate translation: [this will be the time when God punishes this city]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
τοῦ πλησθῆναι πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα
¬which ˓to_be˒_fulfilled (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι ἡμέραι ἐκδικήσεως αὗται εἰσίν τοῦ πλησθῆναι παντᾶ τά γεγραμμένα)
If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [when all the things that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures will happen]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole
τοῦ & πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα
¬which & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι ἡμέραι ἐκδικήσεως αὗται εἰσίν τοῦ πλησθῆναι παντᾶ τά γεγραμμένα)
Here, all has a limited meaning. It does not mean everything that the prophets wrote about every subject. Rather, it means specifically all that the prophets wrote about this particular event. Alternate translation: [all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures about how Jerusalem would be destroyed]
