In this section the Roman soldiers did what their commander Pontius Pilate had ordered them to do. They led Jesus outside the town to the place where they crucified criminals. There they nailed Jesus on a cross. They did the same to two other men, who were criminals. Then they made the three men hang there until they died. The Jewish leaders, the soldiers, and even one of the criminals mocked Jesus. But the other criminal believed in him.

Many people walked along with Jesus.
A large crowd followed Jesus to the place where the soldiers would crucify him.
A great number of people followed Him: This clause indicates that many people went along with Jesus. It does not imply that they were following him as disciples. Many of them may have come to watch the crucifixion because of curiosity or because they wanted to mock Jesus. Some other ways to translate the clause are:

kept mourning and wailing for Him: The word mourning sometimes refers to using a specific action to express sorrow for someone.This Greek word often refers to a person beating his own breast/chest to express his sorrow over another person’s death. When it is followed by an accusative form, as it is here, it means “to mourn” for that person. See koptomai, sense 2, BDAG, p. 559. Here it is used in a general way to mean “mourned for” Jesus. The word wailing refers to expressing sorrow through words, for example, in a song, exclamation, or other lament.Bock (p. 1844) says, “threneō refers to verbal mourning or dirge singing.” See also threneō, BDAG, p. 458. Some other ways to translate mourning and wailing for Him are:
Translate both words in a general way that includes different types of mourning. For example:
mourned and lamented for him (NJB)
Translate one or both of the words with a specific action that expresses mourning in your culture. For example:

It could mean that the women were pounding on their chests as a sign of grief, as was customary in this culture, or it could mean more generally that they were expressing their sorrow over what was happening to Jesus. Alternate translation: [pounding on their chests]

Here, the word following is not figurative. It does not mean that these people were Jesus’ disciples. Alternate translation: [were walking along behind him]

Matthew 26-27; Mark 14-15; Luke 22-23; John 13-19
On the Thursday before he was crucified, Jesus had arranged to share the Passover meal with his disciples in an upper room, traditionally thought to be located in the Essene Quarter of Jerusalem. After they finished the meal, they went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus often met with his disciples. There Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ own disciples, betrayed him to soldiers sent from the High Priest, and they took Jesus to the High Priest’s residence. In the morning the leading priests and teachers of the law put Jesus on trial and found him guilty of blasphemy. The council sent Jesus to stand trial for treason before the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, who resided at the Praetorium while in Jerusalem. The Praetorium was likely located at the former residence of Herod the Great, who had died over 30 years earlier. When Pilate learned that Jesus was from Galilee, he sent him to Herod Antipas, who had jurisdiction over Galilee. But when Jesus gave no answer to Herod’s many questions, Herod and his soldiers sent him back to Pilate, who conceded to the people’s demands that Jesus be crucified. Jesus was forced to carry his cross out of the city gate to Golgotha, meaning Skull Hill, referring to what may have been a small unquarried hill in the middle of an old quarry just outside the gate. After Jesus was unable to carry his cross any further, a man named Simon from Cyrene was forced to carry it for him. There at Golgotha they crucified Jesus. After Jesus died, his body was hurriedly taken down before nightfall and placed in a newly cut, rock tomb owned by Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Jewish high council. This tomb was likely located at the perimeter of the old quarry.
