23:55-56 The women took special note of the tomb’s location because they would return with spices and ointments to anoint his body. The spices were to mask the stench of a rotting corpse. A body would be placed on a stone bench in the side of the tomb until the flesh decomposed. The bones would then be collected and placed in a small ossuary, or bone box, and placed on a shelf in the tomb. In this way, a tomb could be used for many family members over an extended period of time.

Section 23:50–56: Jesus was buried

This section tells about how people buried Jesus’ body. Sometimes the Romans did not allow the body of a crucified person to be buried.Nolland (p. 1166) says, “The bodies of condemned criminals were not always released for burial, especially in cases of treason….For the body to have stayed on the cross overnight would have been a violation of Jewish custom (for the most part, the Romans seem to have shown a sensitivity to this).” But for the Jews, a proper burial was important. It was their custom to bury the body on the same day that a person died. A respected Jewish man named Joseph decided that Jesus must have a proper burial. So Joseph went to Pilate and asked permission to take Jesus’ body and bury it.

The Sabbath Day began just a few hours after Jesus died. On the Sabbath it was forbidden to move a dead body. So Joseph had to act quickly in all that he did.

Then they returned: The Greek verb that the BSB literally translates as Then they returned indicates that the women went back to the place where they were staying in Jerusalem or the surrounding area. They did not go back to their homes in Galilee at this time. Some other ways to translate the clause Then they returned are:

to prepare spices and perfumes: This phrase indicates that the women prepared sweet-smelling substances to use to anoint Jesus’ body. Luke did not indicate how the women prepared them.

The women were planning to put the spices and perfumes on Jesus’ body after the Sabbath. It was a custom of the Jews to do this to a corpse before burial. They did this in order to honor the one who had died and to preserve the body for a while.

Translate the phrase in a natural way in your language.

spices and perfumes: In this context the words spices and perfumes have a similar meaning. They refer to sweet-smelling substances that were often used to anoint a dead body. The sweet smell of these substances helped to hide the smell of decay. The substances used in this way were probably some type of fragrant salve, oil, or ointment. They were not the same spices that were used in food.

In some languages it may be more natural to use one general term to describe such burial spices/perfumes. For example:

fragrant anointing oils

sweet-smelling burial perfumes

spices: The Greek word that the BSB translates as spices can refer to any kind of fragrant substance.arōma, BDAG, p. 140. Here the word probably refers to some type of fragrant ointment.

perfumes: The Greek word that the BSB translates as perfumes means “ointments, perfumes.”mura, BDAG, p. 661. The word often referred to expensive oils that smelled very sweet.

And: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as And is a common conjunction that is often translated as “and.” Here it introduces what the women did next. After they prepared spices and perfumes to anoint Jesus’ body, they rested on the Sabbath. They did not return immediately to the tomb, so there is an implied contrast with 23:56b. For example:

they rested on the Sabbath: This clause indicates that at sunset on Friday the women began to celebrate the Sabbath day. The Sabbath was the day when the Jews rested and worshiped. So the women did not go back to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body until that day was over. See how you translated Sabbath in 23:54.

according to the commandment: The women rested in order to obey the commandment. The phrase the commandment refers to the command about the Sabbath in the Law of Moses. It is one of the Ten Commandments that God told Moses to give to all the Jewish people. God said that they must keep the Sabbath (seventh) day holy and do no work on that day. See Deuteronomy 5:12–15.

This final division in the Gospel of Luke begins just after Jesus rose from the dead. It tells what happened when women came to Jesus’ tomb very early on Sunday morning after the Sabbath. Angels told them that he was alive again. This division also tells about Jesus coming to two disciples as they walked to a village on that same Sunday. Then it tells about his appearing to a group of his followers that included the eleven apostles. The division ends with his going up to heaven.

There are different ways to divide this division into sections. The Notes have these sections:

On the Thursday before he was crucified, Jesus had arranged to share the Passover meal with his disciples in an upper room, traditionally thought to be located in the Essene Quarter of Jerusalem. After they finished the meal, they went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus often met with his disciples. There Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ own disciples, betrayed him to soldiers sent from the High Priest, and they took Jesus to the High Priest’s residence. In the morning the leading priests and teachers of the law put Jesus on trial and found him guilty of blasphemy. The council sent Jesus to stand trial for treason before the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, who resided at the Praetorium while in Jerusalem. The Praetorium was likely located at the former residence of Herod the Great, who had died over 30 years earlier. When Pilate learned that Jesus was from Galilee, he sent him to Herod Antipas, who had jurisdiction over Galilee. But when Jesus gave no answer to Herod’s many questions, Herod and his soldiers sent him back to Pilate, who conceded to the people’s demands that Jesus be crucified. Jesus was forced to carry his cross out of the city gate to Golgotha, meaning Skull Hill, referring to what may have been a small unquarried hill in the middle of an old quarry just outside the gate. After Jesus was unable to carry his cross any further, a man named Simon from Cyrene was forced to carry it for him. There at Golgotha they crucified Jesus. After Jesus died, his body was hurriedly taken down before nightfall and placed in a newly cut, rock tomb owned by Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Jewish high council. This tomb was likely located at the perimeter of the old quarry.
