TSNTyndale Study Notes:

2:20-23 for the Holy One has given you his Spirit: The Holy Spirit gives believers the ability to understand and recognize spiritual truth (see Isa 61:1; Acts 10:38; 2 Cor 1:21-22). Those who have the Spirit know the truth about the Father and the Son and can detect what does not accord with the truth of the apostles’ teaching.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πᾶς ὁ ἀρνούμενος τὸν Υἱὸν

everyone ¬which disowning the Son

If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state explicitly what this means in light of what John says in the previous verse. Alternate translation: [Everyone who denies that Jesus is the Son of God and the Messiah]

Note 2 topic: guidelines-sonofgodprinciples

(Occurrence -1) τὸν Υἱὸν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: πᾶς ὁ ἀρνούμενος τὸν Υἱὸν οὐδὲ τὸν Πατέρα ἔχει ὁ ὁμολογῶν τὸν Υἱὸν καὶ τὸν Πατέρα ἔχει)

Son is an important title for Jesus.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

οὐδὲ τὸν Πατέρα ἔχει & καὶ τὸν Πατέρα ἔχει

neither the Father /is/_having & also the Father /is/_having

The language of possession that John is using actually indicates that such a person does or does not belong to God, rather than that God does or does not belong to such a person. Alternate translation: [does not belong to the Father … belongs to the Father as well]

Note 4 topic: guidelines-sonofgodprinciples

(Occurrence -1) τὸν Πατέρα

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: πᾶς ὁ ἀρνούμενος τὸν Υἱὸν οὐδὲ τὸν Πατέρα ἔχει ὁ ὁμολογῶν τὸν Υἱὸν καὶ τὸν Πατέρα ἔχει)

Father is an important title for God. Alternate translation: [God the Father … God the Father]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ὁ ὁμολογῶν τὸν Υἱὸν

¬which the_‹one› confessing the Son

If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state explicitly what this means in light of what John says in the previous verse. Alternate translation: [Everyone who truly believes and acknowledges publicly that Jesus is the Son of God and the Messiah]
