UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-quotations

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

and=he/it_said

Alternate translation: “So Judah asked her,”

מָ֣ה הָֽעֵרָבוֹן֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶתֶּן לָּךְ֒

Alternate translation: “What should I give to you as a pledge”

Note 2 topic: translate-unknown

חֹתָֽמְךָ֙ וּפְתִילֶ֔ךָ

seal,your and,cord,your

A signet or “identification seal” was a ring or small cylinder-shaped object that had the owner’s name engraved on it and was worn around his neck on a cord. It was used to prove his identity and to sign documents that were written on clay tablets, by rolling the cylinder over the soft clay. If people in your culture are not familiar with these things, you could put some of this information in a footnote. Alternate translation: “Give me your signature thing with its string that you wear around your neck,”

וּמַטְּךָ֖

and,staff,your

Alternate translation: “and your cane”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶ֖יהָ

and,went_in to=her/it

Consider again how you translated the idiom went to in the book of Genesis. See Gen 6:4 (See: note); 16:2, 4; 19:31; 30:3-4; 38:2, 8-9, 16, 18. It may be necessary to translate this phrase in different ways, depending on the context; for example, the relationship in Gen 38:16, 18 was outside of marriage. Alternate translation: “Then he lay with her,”

וַתַּ֥הַר לֽוֹ

and=she/it_conceived/became_pregnant to=him/it

Consider again how you translated “conceive” in the book of Genesis. See Gen 4:1, 17; 16:4-5; 19:36; 21:2; 25:21; 29:32-35; 30:5, 7, 17, 19, 23; 38:3-4, 18. Alternate translation: “and she became pregnant by him.” or “and he caused her to become pregnant.”
