TSNTyndale Study Notes:

38:26 She is more righteous than I am: Judah acknowledged that he had shirked his responsibility to provide an heir. It was sinful for Judah to go to a prostitute, but Tamar had a legal right to be the mother of Judah’s child and had acted on that right. In the book of Ruth, the elders analogously blessed the marriage of Boaz and Ruth, praying that God would make Ruth like Tamar (Ruth 4:12; cp. Matt 1:3, 5).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

וַיַּכֵּ֣ר יְהוּדָ֗ה

and,recognized Yehuda

Alternate translation: “Judah saw that the things she had were his”

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙

and=he/it_said

Alternate translation: “and admitted,”

צָֽדְקָ֣ה מִמֶּ֔נִּי

righteous more_~_than,I

Alternate translation: “She is right, and I am wrong,”

כִּֽי־עַל־כֵּ֥ן לֹא־נְתַתִּ֖יהָ לְשֵׁלָ֣ה בְנִ֑י

that/for/because/then/when on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in yes/correct/thus/so not give,her to,Shelah son,my

Be consistent here with how you spelled Shelah in verses 5, 11, 14. Alternate translation: “because I refused to have my son Shelah marry her as I was required to!” or “because I did not let her marry my son Shelah as I was required to!”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

וְלֹֽא יָסַ֥ף ע֖וֹד לְדַעְתָּֽה

and=not he_repeated again/more to,know,her

Consider again how you translated the idiom “knew” in the book of Genesis. See Gen 4:1 (and note), 17, 25; 19:8; 24:16; 38:26. It may be necessary to translate 38:26 differently, since the relationship in this verse was outside of marriage. Compare how you translated a related idiom (“went to”) in verse 18. Alternate translation: “So they released her and after that he never again slept with her” or “… never had sexual relations with Tamar again.”
