37:18-20 When Joseph’s brothers saw him coming, they devised a plot to kill . . . the dreamer and end his dreams. Earlier, they had unjustly killed the men of Shechem to avenge their sister (ch 34); in the region of Shechem, they now plotted to unjustly kill their own brother out of envy.

A cistern was a large hole or pit that had been dug in the ground to catch rain water and store it there. It was wide at the bottom and had a small opening at the top. The sides of the hole were covered with plaster so that it would hold water. Alternate translation: “into one of the empty pits here.”

וְ⁠אָמַ֕רְנוּ חַיָּ֥ה רָעָ֖ה

and,say living wild

Alternate translation: “Then we will tell people that a ferocious wild animal”

אֲכָלָ֑תְ⁠הוּ

devoured,him

Alternate translation: “has eaten him,” or “ate him down,”

וְ⁠נִרְאֶ֕ה

and,see

Alternate translation: “and everyone will see”

מַה יִּהְי֖וּ חֲלֹמֹתָֽי⁠ו

what? become his/its=dreams

Joseph’s brothers are speaking here in a disdainful way, continuing to mock him. Alternate translation: “what will become of his dreams!” or “what happens to his great dreams!” or “if his great dreams come true!”
