TSNTyndale Study Notes:

42:6-7 Joseph’s first dream (37:5-11) was partially fulfilled when his brothers bowed down to him without recognizing him (see also 43:26; 44:14). It was totally fulfilled in 50:18. Joseph recognized his brothers immediately, but he could not reveal himself because he did not yet trust them to be the honest men they claimed to be (42:10).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

וַיַּ֥רְא יוֹסֵ֛ף אֶת אֶחָ֖יו וַיַּכִּרֵ֑ם

and=he/it_saw Yōşēf DOM brothers,his and,recognized,them

Alternate translation: “Joseph immediately recognized his brothers”

וַיִּתְנַכֵּ֨ר אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם

and,pretended_to_be_a_stranger to,them

For some languages it is better to divide the first sentence in this verse into shorter sentences. Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: “but he treated them like strangers” or “But he pretended that he did not know them”

וַיְדַבֵּ֧ר אִתָּ֣ם קָשׁ֗וֹת

and=he/it_spoke with=them harshly

Consider whether or not it is more natural to begin a new sentence here in your language. Alternate translation: “and spoke to them in a harsh way” or “In fact, he spoke to them roughly”

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙

and=he/it_said to,them

Alternate translation: “and questioned them,” or “and demanded,”

מֵאַ֣יִן בָּאתֶ֔ם

from,where come

Alternate translation: “Where are you from?”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / honorifics

מֵאֶ֥רֶץ כְּנַ֖עַן לִשְׁבָּר אֹֽכֶל

from,land Kanaan to,buy food

For some languages it is necessary to begin with a respectful title or form of address when someone talks to a person of high status like Joseph. See how Joseph’s brothers address him in verse 10. Alternate translation: “Sir, we came from the land of Canaan to buy some grain.” or “Sir, we are from the land of Canaan and we came to buy some grain.”
