TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:1-31 This song, a victory hymn usually credited to Deborah, presents a second, more poetic account of the entire battle with various details that supplement the prose account. It is one of the most ancient Hebrew poems. It blesses the Lord, those tribes who responded to the muster, and Jael. It curses those who remained at home, Sisera, and his mother’s entourage. It contrasts conditions before Barak’s victory, when the Lord’s curse was on the land, with the life of blessing in the wake of the warriors’ righteous acts. It ends with a prayer that the Lord’s enemies will perish like Sisera (5:31).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) when you went out from Seir, when you marched from Edom

(Some words not found in UHB: YHWH in/on/at/with,went_out,you from,Seir in/on/at/with,marched,you from, region ʼₑdōm earth/land trembled also/yet heavens poured also/yet clouds poured water )

This refers to the time when the Israelites left Edom to start conquering the people in Canaan. Yahweh empowering his people to defeat the people of Canaan is spoken of as if he were a warrior leading the Israelite army.

Note 2 topic: translate-names

(Occurrence 0) Seir

(Some words not found in UHB: YHWH in/on/at/with,went_out,you from,Seir in/on/at/with,marched,you from, region ʼₑdōm earth/land trembled also/yet heavens poured also/yet clouds poured water )

Seir is a mountain on the border of the land of Israel and Edom.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) the earth shook, and the skies also trembled; also the clouds poured down water

(Some words not found in UHB: YHWH in/on/at/with,went_out,you from,Seir in/on/at/with,marched,you from, region ʼₑdōm earth/land trembled also/yet heavens poured also/yet clouds poured water )

This could mean: (1) this is poetic language that emphasizes Yahweh’s power by describing it as causing earthquakes and storms or (2) the people of Canaan being terrified as the Israelites were about to attack them is spoken of as if the earth and sky were shaking.
