TSNTyndale Study Notes:

9:14-29 This is the fourth and last exorcism in Mark (1:21-28; 5:1-20; 7:24-30). The disciples were unable to perform the exorcism, so Jesus performed it, emphasizing the necessity of faith (cp. 2:5; 5:34; 10:52). This is another example of Jesus’ great healing ability and of the disciples’ failure (8:32-33; 9:5-7).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τοῦτο τὸ γένος

this ¬the kind

Here Jesus implies that he is speaking about a kind of demon. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “This kind of demon”

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-exceptions

ἐν οὐδενὶ δύναται ἐξελθεῖν, εἰ μὴ ἐν προσευχῇ καὶ νηστείᾳ

by nothing /is/_able /to/_come_out except ¬not/lest by prayer and (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς τοῦτο τὸ γένος ἐν οὐδενὶ δύναται ἐξελθεῖν εἰ μὴ ἐν προσευχῇ καὶ νηστείᾳ)

If, in your language, it would appear that Jesus was making a statement here and then contradicting it, you could reword this to avoid using an exception clause. Alternate translation: “is able to come out only by prayer and fasting”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / go

ἐξελθεῖν

/to/_come_out

In a context such as this, your language might say “go” instead of come. Alternate translation: “to go out”

Note 4 topic: translate-textvariants

προσευχῇ καὶ νηστείᾳ

prayer and (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς τοῦτο τὸ γένος ἐν οὐδενὶ δύναται ἐξελθεῖν εἰ μὴ ἐν προσευχῇ καὶ νηστείᾳ)

Many ancient manuscripts read prayer and fasting. The ULT follows that reading. Some ancient manuscripts read “prayer.” If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of the ULT.
