OET (OET-RV) and if we’re his children, then we’re also heirs so we’ll receive an inheritance from God. That makes us fellow-heirs along with Messiah—if we’re suffering with him then we’ll also be honoured along with him.

OET-LVAnd if children, also heirs, heirs on_one_hand of_god, on_the_other_hand fellow-heirs of_chosen_one/messiah, if_indeed we_are_suffering_with  him, that also we_may_be_glorified_with  him.

ULT Now if children, then also heirs: both heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer together with him so that we may also be glorified together with him.

UST Since we are God’s spiritual children, we are also those who will inherit blessings from God. We inherit blessings from God himself and also together with the Messiah Jesus. This is true only if we keep suffering together with the Messiah in order for God to also glorify us together with the Messiah.

BSB And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him.

BLB and if children, also heirs: heirs indeed of God, and joint-heirs of Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified together.

AICNT And if children, then heirs; heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

OEB and if children, then heirs – heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ, since we share Christ’s sufferings in order that we may also share his glory.

2DT If children, also heirs—God’s heirs, co-heirs with Christos—since we co-suffer so may we be co-splendored.

WEB and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.

WMB and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Messiah, if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.

NET And if children, then heirs (namely, heirs of God and also fellow heirs with Christ) – if indeed we suffer with him so we may also be glorified with him.

LSV and if children, also heirs, heirs, indeed, of God, and heirs together of Christ—if, indeed, we suffer together, that we may also be glorified together.

FBV If we're his children, then we're his heirs. We are heirs of God, and heirs together with Christ. But if we want to share in his glory we must share in his sufferings.

TCNT Now if we are children, we are also heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

T4T Because we are God’s children, we also will some day receive/inherit eternal blessings/privileges. We will receive/inherit them from God, and we will also receive/inherit them just like Christ has inherited them. But we must suffer for doing good as Christ did, in order to receive splendor as he did.

LEB and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer together with him so that we may also be glorified together with him.
¶

BBE And if we are children, we have a right to a part in the heritage; a part in the things of God, together with Christ; so that if we have a part in his pain, we will in the same way have a part in his glory.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

8:17 Jesus is heir to all of God’s promises (Mark 12:1-12; Gal 3:18-19; Heb 1:2), and as those who belong to Jesus, we share with him in that glorious inheritance. However, just as it was for Jesus, our path to glory is also marked by suffering. We experience the difficulties that come from striving to live righteously in a world dominated by sin (2 Cor 1:5; Phil 1:29; 3:10).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-condition-fact

εἰ

if

Paul is speaking as if this were a hypothetical possibility, but he means that it is actually true. If your language does not state something as a condition if it is certain or true, and if your readers might misunderstand and think that what Paul is saying is not certain, then you can translate his words as an affirmative statement. Alternate translation: “because”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

εἰ & τέκνα, καὶ κληρονόμοι; κληρονόμοι μὲν Θεοῦ

if & children also heirs heirs on_one_hand ˱of˲_God

Paul is leaving out some of the words that a sentence would need in many languages to be complete. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply these words from the end of the previous verse. Alternate translation: “if we are children, then we are also heirs: we are both heirs of God”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τέκνα

children

See how you translated this word in the previous verse.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

κληρονόμοι; κληρονόμοι μὲν Θεοῦ

heirs heirs on_one_hand ˱of˲_God

Paul uses heirs to refer to Christians as if they will inherit property and wealth from a family member. He means that they will receive everything that God has promised to give Christians. If it might be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “those who will receive what God has promised us: both those who receive those things from God”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

συνκληρονόμοι & Χριστοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἰ δὲ τέκνα καὶ κληρονόμοι κληρονόμοι μὲν Θεοῦ συγκληρονόμοι δὲ Χριστοῦ εἴπερ συμπάσχομεν ἵνα καὶ συνδοξασθῶμεν)

Paul uses joint heirs to refer to Christians as if they, along with Christ, will inherit property and wealth from a family member. He means that God will give to Christians what he gives to Christ. If it might be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “we will also receive what God has promised us and Christ together”

Note 6 topic: writing-pronouns

συνπάσχομεν, ἵνα καὶ συνδοξασθῶμεν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἰ δὲ τέκνα καὶ κληρονόμοι κληρονόμοι μὲν Θεοῦ συγκληρονόμοι δὲ Χριστοῦ εἴπερ συμπάσχομεν ἵνα καὶ συνδοξασθῶμεν)

The pronoun him here refers to Christ. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “we suffering together with Christ so that we may also be glorified together with Christ”

Note 7 topic: grammar-connect-logic-goal

ἵνα

that

Paul uses so that here to state the goal for which Christians suffer together with Christ. Use a natural way in your language for introducing a purpose clause. Alternate translation: “in order that”

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

καὶ συνδοξασθῶμεν

also also ˱we˲_/may_be/_glorified_with_‹him›

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “God may also glorify us together with him”
