TSNTyndale Study Notes:

19:1-38 The Canaanites were an evil, corrupting people. God judged their morally bankrupt civilization and warned others against becoming like them. It was difficult to get Lot and his family out of Sodom; it was more difficult to get Sodom out of Lot and his family. This chapter helped later Israelites to understand the moral and spiritual threat of the peoples living in and around the Promised Land, such as the Canaanites and Lot’s descendants, the Moabites and the Ammonites (see Num 22–25; Deut 23:3-6; Josh 24:9; Judg 10:7-9; 11:4-5; 1 Sam 10:27; 1 Kgs 11:1-3; 2 Kgs 24:2).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-quotations

וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֜ים אֶל־ל֗וֹט

and=they_said the,men to/towards Lōţ

Alternate translation: “Then the two men asked Lot,”

עֹ֚ד מִֽי לְךָ֣ פֹ֔ה

else who? to/for=yourself(m) here

Alternate translation: “What other family members do you have here,” or “Do you have any other relatives here in this city,”

חָתָן֙ וּבָנֶ֣יךָ וּבְנֹתֶ֔יךָ

sons-in-law and,sons,your and,daughters,your

Consider whether it is better in your language to begin a new sentence here or later in this verse. Alternate translation: “such as sons-in-law or sons or daughters” or “If you have sons-in-law, sons, daughters,”

וְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר לְךָ֖

and=all/each/any/every which/who to/for=yourself(m)

Alternate translation: “or any other relatives”

בָּעִ֑יר

in/on/at/with,city

The punctuation you use here depends on whether or not you began a new sentence earlier in this quote. Alternate translation: “in this city,”

הוֹצֵ֖א

bring_~_out

Whether or not you begin a new sentence here will depend on whether you began a new sentence earlier in this quote. Alternate translation: “then quickly take them out”

מִן הַמָּקֽוֹם

from/more_than the,place

Make sure that the way you translate this phrase fits well with the ways that you refer to the city of Sodom earlier in this verse and in the next verse. It may help to read the entire verse aloud to make sure everything is clear and sounds natural in your language. Alternate translation: “from here,”
