TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:1-13 Satan tempted Jesus to bypass his Father’s plan of salvation by taking power and glory for himself. The forty-day temptation in the wilderness parallels Israel’s forty years of testing in the wilderness. Israel failed when tested, but Jesus was victorious.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

γέγραπται γὰρ, ὅτι τοῖς ἀγγέλοις αὐτοῦ ἐντελεῖται περὶ σοῦ, τοῦ διαφυλάξαι σε

˱it˲_˓has_been˒_written for ¬that ˱to˲_the angels ˱of˲_him ˱he˲_˓will_be˒_commanding concerning you ¬which ˓to˒_guard you

If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [For it is written that he will give orders to his angels concerning you, to protect you]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

γέγραπται γὰρ

˱it˲_˓has_been˒_written for

The devil implies that his quote from the Psalms means that if Jesus really is the Son of God, he will not be hurt if he jumps from this great height. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly, as UST does. Alternate translation: [You will not be hurt, because it is written]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

γέγραπται

˱it˲_˓has_been˒_written

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state what is doing the action. Alternate translation: [the Scriptures say]

Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns

τοῖς ἀγγέλοις αὐτοῦ ἐντελεῖται περὶ σοῦ, τοῦ διαφυλάξαι σε

˱to˲_the angels ˱of˲_him ˱he˲_˓will_be˒_commanding concerning you ¬which ˓to˒_guard you

He refers to God. Alternate translation: [God will order his angels to protect you]
