TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:16-30 Jesus’ sermon in Nazareth previewed his whole public ministry. Jesus returned to his hometown synagogue to announce the good news that God’s salvation had now arrived. The people were pleased until Jesus reminded them that God reaches out to Gentiles as well as to Jews. The infuriated crowd then attempted to kill him.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

πρὸς οὐδεμίαν αὐτῶν ἐπέμφθη Ἠλείας

to no_one ˱of˲_them /was/_sent to (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καὶ πρὸς οὐδεμίαν αὐτῶν ἐπέμφθη Ἠλίας εἰ μὴ εἰς Σάρεπτα τῆς Σιδωνίας πρὸς γυναῖκα χήραν)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who did the action. Alternate translation: [God did not send Elijah to any of them except]

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-exceptions

πρὸς οὐδεμίαν αὐτῶν ἐπέμφθη Ἠλείας, εἰ μὴ

to no_one ˱of˲_them /was/_sent to (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καὶ πρὸς οὐδεμίαν αὐτῶν ἐπέμφθη Ἠλίας εἰ μὴ εἰς Σάρεπτα τῆς Σιδωνίας πρὸς γυναῖκα χήραν)

If, in your language, it would appear that Jesus was making a statement here and then contradicting it, you could reword this to avoid using an exception clause. Alternate translation: [God only sent Elijah to]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

εἰς Σάρεπτα τῆς Σιδωνίας, πρὸς γυναῖκα χήραν

to Sarepta ˱of˲_the Sidonian_‹region› to /the/_woman widow

The people listening to Jesus would have understood that the people of Zarephath were Gentiles. Alternate translation: [to a Gentile widow living in Zarephath in Sidon]

Note 4 topic: translate-names

εἰς Σάρεπτα τῆς Σιδωνίας

to Sarepta ˱of˲_the Sidonian_‹region›

Zarephath is the name of a city, and Sidon is the name of the region where it is located.
