4:44 Luke probably used Judea in the general sense of “the land of the Jews,” since Jesus’ ministry was then in Galilee in the north (see 5:1), not south in Judea.
Jesus continued healing people, casting out demons, and preaching the good news about the kingdom of God. The people of Capernaum tried to stop him from leaving (4:42), but Jesus continued going from place to place, helping many people.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
Jesus Heals Many People
Jesus Cures Simon’s Mother-in-Law and Many Others (GW)
There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 8:14–17 and Mark 1:29–34.
Verses 4:42–44 tell the same story that is in Mark 1:35–39. Jesus wanted to get away from all the people in order to pray.
And He continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea.
Then Jesus left, and he continued preaching in the synagogues in Judea.
So Jesus went to other towns in the area/land of Judea and told his message in their meeting places.
And: This verse begins with a Greek conjunction that is often translated as “and.” Many English versions, including the BSB, translate it that way. However, since 4:44 tells what happened as a result of Jesus’ words in 4:43, many other versions translate it as “so.” Connect 4:44a to 4:43b in a way that is natural in your language.
Jesus did not remain with the people of Capernaum. Instead, he moved on to different towns to preach. In some languages, it may be necessary to make this explicit. For example:
Then he left there and
He continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea: The form of the Greek verb that the BSB translates as He continued to preach shows continuous, repeated, or habitual activity. Preaching in the synagogues was a regular activity for Jesus. He continued to go to different Jewish towns and preach in their synagogues on the Sabbath days.
Some other ways to translate this are:
he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea (NIV)
he continued to travel around, preaching in synagogues throughout Judea. (NLT)
preach: The Greek word that the BSB translates as preach means “announce, tell, or send out news about something.” For example:
proclaiming his message (JBP)
The BSB translates this same word as “proclaim” in 4:18c.
synagogues: The word synagogue also occurs in 4:38a. See the note on synagogue at 4:20d for a more complete discussion.
Judea: There is a textual issue here. Some Greek manuscripts read “synagogues of Judea.” Most English versions follow these manuscripts. Other Greek manuscripts read “synagogues of Galilee.” The KJV follows these manuscripts. The word Judea is the name of a province where the Jews lived.
The word Judea presents a problem here. The parallel passage in Mark 1:39 says that Jesus preached throughout Galilee. Galilee and Judea were the two provinces where the Jews lived. Some ways to explain this are:
In this context, Judea may refer generally to the country where the Jews lived. This would include the provinces of both Judea and Galilee. Another way to translate this is:
throughout the country (GNT)
Here Luke gave a summary statement of Jesus’ ministry. He extended Jesus’ preaching of the gospel past Galilee to Judea. But he did not exclude Galilee.
It is recommended that you translate this as:
the area/land of Judea
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
τῆς Ἰουδαίας
¬the ˱of˲_Judea
Since Jesus is in Galilee in this part of the Gospel of Luke, the term Judea here probably refers to the entire region where the Jews lived at that time. Alternate translation: [where the Jews lived]
