4:8 You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him: Israel turned to idolatry when suffering hardship in the wilderness (Deut 9:12). Jesus refused to worship Satan.
In this section, Luke wrote that the devil (Satan) tempted Jesus, that is, the devil tried to persuade Jesus to do things that God did not want Jesus to do. Luke told about three of those things. Jesus did not do any of the things that the devil suggested. He refused the devil and his temptations by quoting the word of God from the book of Deuteronomy.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
The Temptation of Jesus
Jesus Is Tempted by the Devil (NCV)
There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 4:1–11, and a shorter version occurs in Mark 1:12–13.
In this paragraph, Luke reported another way that the devil tempted Jesus.Luke reports this temptation as the second temptation of the three. In Matthew 4 this temptation is reported third. The first two temptations that Luke reported happened in the desert, and the third temptation happened at the temple in Jerusalem. The devil tempted Jesus to make an agreement with him.
But Jesus answered, “It is written:
Jesus said, “It is written in the Scriptures:
But Jesus refused. He said, “The Scriptures say,
Jesus told the devil that in the holy writings, it says,
But: The Greek word that the BSB translates as But is a conjunction that is often translated as “and.” Some English versions, such as the ESV, translate it that way. Other versions, such as the NIV, GNT, and NET, do not translate this conjunction here. Connect 4:8a to 4:7b in a way that is natural in your language.
Jesus answered: As in 4:4a, the Greek word that the BSB literally translates as answered here means “replied” or “responded.” Jesus was not answering a question. He was responding to the devil as the devil tried to tempt him to sin.
Jesus’ response implied that he was refusing to do what Satan had wanted. You may need to make this clear in your translation. For example:
Jesus refused. He said
It is written: As in 4:4a, Jesus used the phrase It is written to introduce words from the Old Testament Scriptures. Some other ways to translate this are:
Scripture says (REB)
It is written in the Scriptures (NCV)
‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”
‘You(sing) must worship the Lord, who is your(sing) God, and serve/obey only him.'"
‘The Lord your(sing) God is the one before whom you(sing) should bow. He is the only one you(sing) should honor.'"
Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only: The clause Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only is a quotation from Deuteronomy 6:13. These words were a command to each of the people of Israel. In Greek, the verbs Worship and serve and the pronoun your are singular. However, since the command is given to everyone, in some languages it may be more natural to use the plural forms:
You(plur) must worship the Lord, who is your(plur) God, and obey only him.
Jesus quoted this command in order to tell Satan that he would never worship Satan. Jesus was declaring that he himself would obey the Scriptures and worship only the true God. See Lord, Context 2, in the Glossary.
Worship…serve: The two Greek verbs that most English versions translate here as Worship and serve have similar meanings. To Worship God means to bow before him and revere/respect him. (See the note on “worship me” in 4:7a). To serve God refers here to doing acts of worship to honor him.
These two verbs work together to describe how people should act toward God. Some ways to translate these verbs are:
You shall do homage to the Lord your God and worship him alone. (REB)
Revere/Respect the Lord your God and worship only him.
You must esteem God…honoring him alone in all you do.

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀποκριθείς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Γέγραπται Κύριον τόν Θεόν σοῦ προσκυνήσεις καί αὐτῷ μόνῳ λατρεύσεις)
Together the words answering and said mean that Jesus responded to the offer that the devil made. Alternate translation: [Jesus responded to him]

If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [It is written that one must worship the Lord his God and serve only him]

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀποκριθείς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Γέγραπται Κύριον τόν Θεόν σοῦ προσκυνήσεις καί αὐτῷ μόνῳ λατρεύσεις)
Jesus clearly implies in his answer that he is rejecting the devil’s challenge. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly, as UST does. Alternate translation: [Jesus replied, ‘No, I will not do that, because it is written’]

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state what is doing the action. Alternate translation: [The Scriptures say]

Here, it may not be clear whether to use the singular or plural form of You because this is a short quotation from the Scriptures and the context is not given. The word is actually singular because, even though Moses said this to the Israelites as a group, each individual person was supposed to obey this command. So in your translation, use the singular form of You, if your language marks that distinction. In general these notes will not discuss whether You is singular or plural when this should be clear from the context. But they will address ambiguous cases such as this one.
