DefinitionShort: pertaining to being appropriate for the expression of worship and reverence

        Glosses: holy

Comments: In {S:04600901300012} the reference of the expression οἱ τὰ ἱερὰ ἐργαζόμενοι is the activities in the Temple involving the performance of various rituals.|In a number of languages, however, it is difficult to speak of ‘holy writings’ or ‘holy activities.’ In some instances one may use an expression which refers to positive taboo, that is to say, something which has been dedicated exclusively to the service of God, but in other languages it may be necessary to use some phrase which identifies objects or activities as being ‘appropriate for worship’ or ‘characteristic of worship’ or ‘involved in worship.’

DefinitionShort: a temple or sanctuary ({L:ναός}[a], {D:7.15}) and the surrounding consecrated area

        Glosses: temple

Comments: With the exception of ἱερόν in {S:04401902700038} (a reference to the temple of Artemis in Ephesus), ἱερόν in the NT refers to the Temple in Jerusalem, including the entire Temple precinct with its buildings, courts, and storerooms.|In a number of languages ἱερόν is rendered normally as ‘the house of God,’ or, as in {S:04401902700038}, ‘the house of the goddess Artemis.’ In a number of languages, however, there are technical terms for ‘temple,’ and these are often carefully distinguished from an expression designating a central sanctuary in which the deity is thought to dwell (ναός[a]).|Though in a number of contexts it is not necessary to distinguish between ἱερόν and ναός, in {S:04002101200032} (and parallel passages: {S:04101101500038}, {S:04201904500010}, and {S:04300201400010}) it is important to indicate this distinction, so as not to leave the impression that sacrificial animals were actually being sold inside the central sanctuary.
