Yeshua talks about future suffering and death

Mark 8:31—9:1

Luke 9:22–27

16:21 Yeshua talks about future suffering and death

(Mark 8:31–9:1, Luke 9:22-27)

21From that time onwards, Yeshua began showing his apprentices that he needed to go to Yerushalem and to suffer at the hands of the elders and chief priests and teachers of the law there, before being executed and then coming back to life on the third day.

22But Peter took him aside and started telling him off, saying, “Goodness gracious, master, this certainly won’t happen to you.”

23Yeshua turned towards Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You’re tempting me because you not thinking in a godly way, but only in human terms.

24[ref]Then Yeshua told his apprentices, “If anyone wants to be my follower, they need to suppress their own desires and be ready to sacrifice and to suffer, and then follow me. 25[ref]Because anyone who wants to save their life will lose it, but anyone who loses their life on my account, will be finding it. 26What help would it be to a person if they gain everything in the world, and yet lose their soul? Or put another way, what could a person give in exchange for their soul? 27[ref]Because humanity’s child is going to return displaying the splendour of his father and accompanied by his messengers, and then he’ll reward each individual according to their behaviour. 28I can assure you that some people standing here won’t experience death until they first see humanity’s child coming in his kingdom.

8:31 Yeshua’s radical challenge to his would-be followers

(Mat. 16:21-28, Luke 9:22-27)

31Then Yeshua began teaching his followers that humanity’s child would need to suffer a lot, to be rejected by the religious leaders, and so to be put to death but to come back to life after three days. 32He taught this very clearly, but Peter took him aside and told him off. 33Yeshua turned back and looked at the others, then reprimanded Peter, “Stand back, Satan! you’re applying human values instead of considering God’s plan.

34[ref]Calling out to them and to the crowd, he said, “Anyone who wants to follow me must first put aside their own desires and then follow me—even through very difficult times. 35[ref]Anyone who worries about saving their own life will lose it, but anyone who gives their life due to following me and my teaching will save their life. 36Because it doesn’t benefit a person if they gain everything in the world but lose their soul. 37What can someone offer in order to buy a home for their soul? 38Yes, anyone who is ashamed of me and my message in front of this adulterous and sinful generation, humanity’s child will likewise be ashamed of them when he comes clearly displaying God’s greatness and bringing the holy messengers.

9And he continued, “I can assure you that some of the ones standing here won’t die until they have seen God’s powerful kingdom arrive.”

22saying, “Humanity’s child is destined to suffer many things and to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the religious teachers, and then to be executed and to be brought back to life on the third day.

9:22 The cost of following Yeshua

(Mark 8:34–9:1, Mat. 16:24-28)

23[ref]Yeshua said, “If anyone wants to become my follower, then that person needs to renounce their own desires and follow me, even in suffering and death, 24[ref]because anyone who wants to save their own life will lose it, but anyone who is prepared to lose their life on account of me, they’ll be saving their life. 25How would it benefit a person if they gained the wealth of the whole world, but then ended up lost or destroyed? 26Because anyone who’s ashamed of me and my teachings, humanity’s child will be ashamed of that person when he comes in his splendour and with the splendour of the father and of God’s messengers. 27But I can certainly tell you that some of those who’re standing here won’t die until they see God’s kingdom.
